Fair employee dies on the job in Alexander City

A fair employee died while on the job at the Kiwanis Club Fair in Alexander City, Tallapoosa County Coroner Mike Knox confirms. Alexander City Police Chief Jay Turner says Eugeny Kovalevsky died after climbing up onto the “Ring of Fire” ride to work on an issue he had observed. When the ride operator advised the employee to come down, he fell about 30 feet. The worker was later pronounced deceased at Russell Medical Center.  Kovalevsky, originally from Belarus, had been inspecting a part on the Ring of Fire ride at the fair and had climbed without safety gear to a high level on the ride, according to Turner.

Arizona police officer killed, suspect arrested after stealing 3 cars

Nogales, AZ — A police officer in Arizona is dead and a suspect is in custody after stealing three cars in a violent series of incidents Friday in Nogales. According to Nogales police, officer Jesus Cordova was shot multiple times and killed after pulling over a driver following an armed carjacking at about 2:40 p.m. The suspect exited the car and shot at Cordova after being pulled over, police said. He then allegedly stole two more cars during a police chase, authorities said. Cordova, 44, was engaged and the father of three children. His fiancee is 5 months pregnant with their fourth child.

Construction worker killed by falling limestone on IU campus

Bloomington, IN — A large piece of limestone being installed above a doorway fell and killed a construction worker at Swain Hall West on Indiana University’s campus Wednesday afternoon.IU spokesman Chuck Carney confirmed Wednesday afternoon that the construction worker died. Monroe County coroner Joani Shields said the victim was identified as 35-year-old William M. Brown Jr. of Bloomington. He worked for an independent contractor that had been hired by Indiana University to do renovations on the building. He was not an employee of IU. The crew had been using equipment to lift and place limestone above an interior doorway at the north side of the building when it fell, according to preliminary reports given to emergency responders at the scene. Construction workers had started CPR on the man, who was hit in the head and chest by the limestone, according to Sgt. Brandon Hudson of the Bloomington Fire Department. Hudson estimated the piece of limestone was 6 feet long.

Man who killed Maine sheriff’s deputy now in custody

NORRIDGEWOCK, Maine – The search for a man accused of killing a sheriff’s deputy came to an end Saturday, the fourth day of an intense manhunt in the woods of central Maine. The Maine Department of Public Safety reported that 29-year-old John Williams was in custody but declined to release details of his arrest. Williams was wanted in the fatal shooting early Wednesday of Cpl. Eugene Cole in the town of Norridgewock. Police declined to say whether Williams had been apprehended, or had turned himself in.

Cape Coral tow truck driver killed on the job

CAPE CORAL, Fla – A Cape Coral tow truck operator is dead after being hit by a car, Friday night. Cape Coral Police officers responded to the scene of a serious injury crash at Pine Island Road and Pondella Road, shortly after 8 p.m. on Friday. The victim, identified as Wes Dale, was towing a vehicle when a malfunction occurred causing the vehicle to roll on top of him, according to loved ones. Wes died from his injuries Saturday morning.

Machete was used in killing of 66-year-old AutoZone worker

Tucson, AZ — An AutoZone employee killed in a carjacking outside his workplace late Wednesday was slashed on the head with a machete during the attack, a newly-filed court record indicates. Timothy Abriola, 66, was struck “in the head with a machete an unknown number of times” and also was stabbed with a knife before his attackers packed him into the back seat of his own car and drove off, said an interim criminal complaint filed early Friday in Pima County Justice Court.

Round Rock officer succumbs to injuries after being struck by car

Round Rock police officer Charles Whites died Friday, 61 days after he was struck by a driver while directing traffic around the scene of a fatal wreck on Interstate 35. Whites, 63, was the first Round Rock officer killed in the line of duty in the department’s more than 70-year history, a police spokesman said.

Truck driver killed in single-vehicle crash in Lakeland ID’d

LAKELAND, FL — A Tampa truck driver died Thursday afternoon in a one-vehicle accident, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Michael Wayne Woods, 60, was traveling southbound on County Line Road near Interstate 4 before 4:30 p.m. Thursday when his tractor trailer traveled onto the shoulder of the roadway and overturned, troopers said.

Construction worker who died after fall in Vernon identified

VERNON, CT (WFSB) – Police have identified the female construction worker who died after suffering a fall in Vernon Friday morning. According to police, the worker fell through a hole in the first floor of a Grand Lofts Luxury Apartments building on the Hartford Turnpike. It happened around 7:30 a.m.  Police initially said the woman, identified as 55-year-old Anita Goodwin of Broadbrook, suffered life-threatening injuries. LIFE STAR transported her to Hartford Hospital where she died. Police said this is the third incident they have responded to at the complex. The complex is being built and managed by the Santini family.

Rail Worker Struck, Killed

Bowie, MD — Luke J. Gsell, age 20, of Garnet Valley, PA was killed on April 24, 2018 when was struck and killed by an Amtrak train about a half-mile north of the Bowie State University MARC station Tuesday morning while working as a lookout. Luke worked out of Amtrak out of Bowie, MD and was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Division of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Lodge no. 3012.

OSHA launches inquiry

CLINTON, IA — The Iowa Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the death of a man who reportedly fell from a ladder onto a nearby power source in Clinton. Jose Sanchez, also known as Sanchez-Martinez, was in his mid-20s working for ASG Home Exteriors Corp., based out of McHenry, Illinois, when the incident happened on April 6. In a 911 call, a witness stated that after a “big boom,” she saw a man lying on the ground. At the time of the call, 8:15 a.m., Sanchez was awake and breathing. The female witness said she could hear him mumbling, but soon started to close his eyes. She reported he was having a hard time breathing. The witness said the man had fallen from what appeared to be a 25-foot ladder and hit a nearby “power source” in the back of building two and three at the complex. Clinton Fire and Police departments assisted on scene and brought Sanchez to Mercy Medical Center North.

Woman killed in accident at Bush Brothers’ facility

Dandridge, TN — A temporary worker was killed in an accident yesterday morning at the Bush Brothers cannery in Chestnut Hill, Sheriff Bud McCoig reported. Shannon Smith, 40, of 211 Sullivan Point, Dandridge, died in the accident involving a lift used to hoist heavy pallets of canned goods, the sheriff said his deputies’ reports indicate. Smith had been working at the plant (3304 Chestnut Hill Road) for about six months through a temporary agency, he said. According to deputies’ reports, Smith was cleaning in the area of the machine when she accidentally set off a sensor that caused it to lift, wedging her between the machine and a metal post.

Truck driver killed

MESOPOTAMIA, OH — A truck driver hauling logs was killed about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday after one of the logs fell off his truck and struck him. A supervisor at the Trumbull County 911 Center said the accident happened in the 9000 block of Bundysburg Winsdor Road. On scene was the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office and fire departments from Mesopotamia, Winsdor and Middlefield. The victim’s name was not released Tuesday.

Utility worker shot, killed on job site in Kansas City
