Genesee Power Station employee dies in workplace accident

FLINT, MI – An employee died in an industrial accident at the Genesee Power Station last week. CMS Energy, which owns the facility, released a statement Monday confirming the worker’s death. The worker’s name and the circumstances leading to his death were not released. CMS is the parent company of Consumers Energy, which provides electric and natural gas service to much of Mid-Michigan. The Genesee Power Station at 5310 N. Dort Highway burns waste wood from pallets, crates and other sources to generate electricity. The plant burns a small amount of tires with the wood, as well.

2 deputies shot dead when inmate overpowered them near courthouse

Kansas City, MO — Two Sheriff’s deputies were fatally shot when an inmate overpowered them near a Kansas courthouse on Friday, officials said. The deadly altercation took place about 11:30 a.m. when the two Wyandotte County sheriff’s deputies in Kansas City pulled into the parking lot and were readying to transport inmates to court, said Kelli Bailiff of the sheriff’s office. It’s very possible the deputies were attacked with their own guns, Bailiff said. Deputy Patrick Rohrer, 35, was taken to a hospital where he later died, Kansas City police said. Deputy Theresa King, 44, was rushed to University of Kansas Medical Center in critical condition. She was pronounced dead about 12 hours later, just after midnight on Saturday.

VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) — A man who was killed when a pick-up truck fell from its jack has been identified.cThe Vicksburg Post reports Warren County Deputy Coroner Kelda Bailess confirmed Greg Raimondo’s death Friday.

Backstretch worker stabbed to death in Belmont barn, police say

ELMONT, N.Y. – A female backstretch worker was stabbed to death by a former boyfriend at a Belmont Park barn Sunday morning, police said.  Franco-Martinez will be charged with murdering Maria Larin, 51, who was licensed by the New York State Gaming Commission as a stable employee. She worked as a hotwalker for trainer Doodnauth Shivmangal, who is stabled in Barn 61, which also houses horses trained by Brad Cox and Michelle Nevin.

Duke Energy worker dies in accident in southern Indiana

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (AP) — Police in southern Indiana say a man has died in an apparent industrial accident at a Duke Energy power plant. New Albany Police Chief Todd Bailey says 65-year-old Clarence Silviking Jr. was pronounced dead at a Louisville, Kentucky, hospital from injuries sustained in the accident Monday morning at Duke’s Gallagher Station. Bailey says in a news release the incident was “believed to be an accident.”

RADFORD, Va. (AP) A spokesperson for the Radford Army Ammunition Plant says one of the three victims in a June 11 fire at the plant has died. Andrew Goad, 42, was an employee at the plant. Goad died on Saturday, June 16, due to injuries sustained during a fire at Radford Army Ammunition Plant (RFAAP) on Monday, June 11.

Man dies after trench collapses at Grand County construction site

Granby, CO —  A man (Rosario “Chayo” Martínez) was killed Thursday at a construction site in Grand County after a trench he was working in collapsed. The Granby Police Department says it was called out to the scene about 10 a.m. The man was eventually pulled from the trench, but was unresponsive. Efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful and the man died at Middle Park Medical Center, police said in a news release.

Man Killed in Bucket Truck Near Power Lines

Springfield, Fla. – First responders were on scene Friday afternoon after a man was found dead in a bucket truck near power lines.  The incident happened shortly after 3 pm. on Cocoa Avenue in Springfield.  Panama City Fire, Springfield police, and Gulf Power employees all responded to the scene. According to Springfield Police Chief Barry Roberts, the 35 year old man was an employee of a local tree trimming business and came into contact with active power lines.  his name is being withheld pending notification of relatives.

Tennessee deputy killed: 1 in custody after manhunt; woman charged with murder

Dickson County, TN — A man wanted on suspicion of killing a Dickson County sheriff’s deputy earlier this week was arrested without incident Friday morning after he was spotted by a Tennessee state trooper, officials said at a news conference. Sgt. Daniel Baker, of the Dickson County Sheriff’s Office, was shot and killed Wednesday morning after he went to check on a suspicious vehicle while on-duty. Authorities arrested a woman, identified as Erika Castro-Miles, on suspicion of murder after Baker’s death and launched a manhunt for Steven Wiggins.

Contract Worker Killed In Accident At Ascend Plant In Cantonment

Cantonment, FL — A worker was killed in an industrial accident at Ascend Performance Materials in Cantonment. “We are aware of an incident at our facility in Cantonment,” Alison Jahn, senior director of Global Communications for Ascend, told NorthEscambia.com Friday night. “The incident involved a contract employee working for a company called KTN. We are currently working with local authorities to investigate the incident and will provide additional details as we have them.” Escambia County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Deb Henley said the death appears to be an accident. Something reportedly fell on the victim.

Construction workers plead for drivers to be careful after woman hits, kills man on I-75 in Detroit

DETROIT, MI – Construction workers are pleading for drivers to be careful after a suspected drunken driver drove into a work zone in Detroit and hit a worker, killing him early Thursday. David Snell, 57, of Bay City, worked at C.A. Hull Contractors in Walled Lake for more than 20 years. He was working along northbound I-75 when he was hit. Michigan State Police had to shut down the interstate for hours at Warren Avenue.

Utility worker dies in accident at central Washington dam

WENATCHEE, Wash. – The Chelan Public Utility District says an employee (Edward Bromiley) has died while working at a hydroelectric dam south of Wenatchee. The utility says a 40-year-old employee working on the spillway at Rock Island Dam on Wednesday was hit by a piece of steel from the spillway structure. Co-workers provided first aid until medics arrived but the worker died. The utility did not identify the employee.

Man dies in Curry County dairy shooting

CURRY COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – Deputies say a local dairy farm employee was killed by his co-worker.  Deputies in Curry County say 29-year-old Leonidas Flores opened fire in the milking barn of a dairy near the New Mexico-Texas border Thursday afternoon.  According to a criminal complaint, Flores came into work as usual, then shot a co-worker after he told Flores to “get back to work.”

BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. – Four teenagers were in custody Tuesday after a Maryland police officer was killed during a traffic stop in Baltimore County one day earlier, authorities said. Baltimore County police confirmed Tuesday that the officer killed Monday was Officer Amy Caprio. She had worked for the department for nearly four years.

Woman dies after swing accident at major U.S. design fair

Chicago, IL – -This week, as members of the design industry packed into Chicago’s Merchandise Mart for the 50th annual NeoCon trade show and convention. Jacqueline Albertine, 57, was pronounced dead the following afternoon, as her family removed her from life support at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. After attempted surgery, medical professionals determined her condition too severe to remedy; an autopsy performed on Wednesday determined the death an accident, by way of blunt force injuries to her head.Visiting from Miami Beach, Florida, Albertine had been hanging on a swing-seat installation by the luxury design manufacturer David Edwards at the company’s third-floor showroom when she fell backward. According to colleagues who were present, the fall occurred at around noon on Monday, but officials from the Chicago Fire Department did not arrive to the scene until about 12:30 p.m. Speaking with the Tribune, Shawn MacMullin, president of Corporate Design Choice in Miami, where Albertine had been employed for 14 years, questioned the event’s safety practices, suggesting prompt attention may have saved her life.

City worker killed in SF tow truck accident was mother to toddler

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KTVU) – A city worker, who was a mother to a little girl, died after a vehicle slid off a tow truck and into the path of the worker Wednesday afternoon in San Francisco, a police spokeswoman said. Just before 2:00 p.m., a black Buick was being loaded onto the bed of a Dodge flat-bed style tow truck on 28th and Diamond streets when it “slipped” and rolled back, police said. Three city employees on foot were involved. One woman was struck and transported with life-threatening injuries to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital where she died, hospital officials confirmed.  The woman has been identified as 34-year-old Lilianna Preciado, a utility plumber. She was on a one-day job fixing a leak and replacing some pipe when the accident happened.

Emerson, IA — MidAmerican Energy says an investigation is under way after one contract worker was killed and another injured trying restore power in southwestern Iowa. Officials say the accident happened Wednesday while they were repairing storm damage near Emerson in Mills County. The victims’ names were not immediately released. MidAmerican spokesman Geoff Greenwood issued a statement, saying,” we’re simply heartbroken by what occurred. Our concerns and thoughts are with the family and friends of both of these people.” Thousands of customers lost power during Mondays night’s severe thunderstorms.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. —  William Allee was a cop’s cop.  The decorated officer slept with his shield under his pillow when he rose through the ranks and became chief of detectives.  But that didn’t mean he was running things from a cushy office. He was instead on the streets helping his cops, and above all, his beloved city.  The Willowbrook native sifted through the wreckage at the Fresh Kills landfill after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and fought against drugs, gangs and prostitution in the Lower East Side.  “It was always in his heart,” said his daughter, Diana Allee-Fulton. Allee, 76, died last month from a 9/11-related illness at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He is the highest-ranking uniform cop to die of a Sept. 11 illness, his family said.

Window Washing Company That Employed Fallen Employee Has History of Safety Violations

San Diego, CA — A window washer died Tuesday after falling from the top of an eight-floor high-rise condo complex in downtown San Diego. The worker, identified as 61-year-old James Stinson from Jamul, was rushed to the hospital just before 9 a.m. from the building at 11th and J Streets. He was pronounced dead at the hospital, San Diego police said. Investigators say Stinson was in his harness preparing to wash windows on the second floor of the Metrome Condo complex when he repelled from the top and fell eight stories to the ground, Lt. Christian Sharp said.  The Lakeside company Barry’s Window Cleaning was last cited in February 2015 according to the U.S. Department of Labor website.It was also cited in 2014 for ten safety violations and fined thousands of dollars by Cal/OSHA.
