The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration identified the worker as a 34-year-old senior foreman pipefitter. Sanilac East Fire Authority Chief Doug Moran said the worker was part of a crew installing sewer pipes near the front of the Jellystone Campground at 2353 N. Lakeshore Road near Port Sanilac. Around 4:40 p.m. the worker was eight feet below ground when a chunk of dirt fell off the trench wall and landed on the worker. Fellow contractors were in the trench and digging the victim out when emergency crews arrived. They had exposed the worker’s head and chest, but there were no signs of life. Port Sanilac firefighters determined the trench was too unstable to continue rescue efforts, so they ordered the other contractors to come back above ground. Port Sanilac fire crews requested assistance from Huron and Macomb counties’ technical rescue teams. They arrived nearly three hours after the collapse occurred and began formulating plans for a rescue. Technical rescue crews shored up the trench walls and launched a lengthy rescue effort around 9:30 p.m. They recovered the worker’s body shortly before midnight. MIOSHA regulators will continue investigating what caused the trench collapse and whether contractors were following appropriate safety measures.

Worker dies in the hospital after falling off a ladder

Edgartown, MA — A worker died in the hospital after falling off a ladder and plummeting two stories into the basement. 32-year-old Jose Luis Collaguazo Crespo tragically passed away Tuesday at his work, the Meshacket Commons project in Edgartown, Marthas Vineyard.
