Over that period, life expectancy (from birth) in the US has risen from 39.4 years in 1860, to 78.9 years in 2020. To what do we owe this incredible progress?\u00a0 Well, there\u2019s science, medical advancements, declining maternal, infant, and child mortality rates, education, and improved living and working conditions. And the biggie is public health.\u00a0 And this is <a href=\"https:\/\/nphw.org\/\">National Public Health Week<\/a> (NPHW)!<\/p>\n<p>What exactly is public health? Public health is the science and practice of protecting, promoting, and improving the health of people and their communities through organized efforts, policies, and education.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike clinical medicine, which treats individuals after they become ill, public health aims to prevent health problems before they occur. Whether you think about it or not, public health benefits you, your friends, your family and everyone in your community. It\u2019s an invisible force that protects our safety and well-being.\u00a0 Public health quietly impacts our everyday lives\u2014from the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat. \u00a0We wouldn\u2019t miss it until it\u2019s gone.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>National Public Health Week\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>For the past 30 years, April\u2019s National Public Health Week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apha.org\/events-and-meetings\/national-public-health-week#:~:text=National%20Public%20Health%20Week%20is%20April%207%2D13%2C%202025&amp;text=APHA%20creates%20new%20NPHW%20materials,about%20public%20health%20and%20prevention.\">(here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/nationaltoday.com\/national-public-health-week\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/nationaltoday.com\/national-public-health-week\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/nphw.org\/about-nphw\">here<\/a>) provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of public health.\u00a0 And the <a href=\"https:\/\/apha.org\/\">American Public Health Association<\/a> (APHA) unites communities nationwide to celebrate NPHW, recognize public health contributions, and address key health issues.<\/p>\n<p>NPHW 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of National Public Health Week\u2014a milestone opportunity to raise awareness about public health and how your organization and community support it! Each day of NPHW will focus on a public health topic.\u00a0 You can check out this year\u2019s topics <a href=\"https:\/\/nphw.org\/themes-and-facts\">here<\/a>. These areas are critical to our future success in creating the healthiest nation, and everyone can do their part to help!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Worker Health Is Public Health<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Our nation\u2019s workforce benefits from public health initiatives and interventions. The well-being of workers directly impacts the health of families, communities, and the broader economy. When workers are protected from hazards, have access to healthcare, and work in safe environments, they are less likely to experience illness or injury that could ripple outward\u2014leading to fewer hospital visits, reduced strain on healthcare systems, and more stable households.<\/p>\n<p>Healthy workers are more productive, and their stability helps maintain essential services and industries. Infections, injuries, or stress-related conditions that begin in the workplace can easily extend into public life, especially in this interconnected society. Ensuring worker health is not just a matter of individual safety\u2014it&#8217;s a critical component of public health infrastructure.\u00a0 We all want the workers in our families to come home safe and healthy at the end of the day. Along with the unnamed workers we rely on every single day to provide us with the goods and services we need to live our lives.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>So.\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Public health and public health workers have come under serious attack since the political attacks during COVID-19.\u00a0 To make matters worse, Trump is now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/26\/health\/health-department-grant-cuts-cdc-hhs\/index.html\">cutting public health funding to states<\/a> which is where most public health work is conducted.<\/p>\n<p>Most critical for workers is this administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/jordanbarab.com\/confinedspace\/2025\/04\/01\/niosh\/\">assault<\/a> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/niosh\/index.html\">National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health<\/a> (NIOSH) which is an attack on both worker and public health (see <a href=\"https:\/\/jordanbarab.com\/confinedspace\/2025\/04\/03\/reflections-on-niosh\/\">here,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/jordanbarab.com\/confinedspace\/2025\/04\/01\/niosh\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/politics\/uaw-joins-critics-slamming-rfk-jr-s-cuts-to-worker-safety-unit\/ar-AA1CxnrU?ocid=BingNewsSerp\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kxly.com\/news\/workers-are-going-to-die-on-the-job-agricultural-research-centers-concerned-by-federal-budget\/article_79144b2f-ec38-4a97-a04d-a7734ca8516b.html\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>NIOSH is a small, but mighty agency that provides research, information, consultation, technology transfer, and support for occupational safety and health professional education and training. The agency and Trump\u2019s attempts to cut, shrink, or otherwise eliminate this international leader that is essential to public \u2013 and workplace\u00a0 &#8212; health and safety\u00a0 is beyond short-sighted. It is directly shooting our nation\u2019s workforce in the foot.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Bottom Line<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Call, write, or otherwise harangue your legislators. The decimation of NIOSH will have grave and irreversible impacts on the workers and their families in their districts.\u00a0 Ask them to stand up, support, and give NIOSH the resources it needs to fulfill its statutory mission: \u201cTo assure safe and healthful working conditions for every working person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><strong>Kathleen Rest is the former Executive Director of the Union of Concerned Scientists.
