{"id":11537,"date":"2025-04-18T07:52:08","date_gmt":"2025-04-18T11:52:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jordanbarab.com\/confinedspace\/?p=11537"},"modified":"2025-04-17T13:09:04","modified_gmt":"2025-04-17T17:09:04","slug":"celebrating-the-life-of-a-working-mom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jordanbarab.com\/confinedspace\/2025\/04\/18\/celebrating-the-life-of-a-working-mom\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating the Life of a Working Mom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>99 years, and well more than half of it working.<\/p>\n<p>Born of hardworking immigrant stock, Ellie had aspirations.\u00a0 She wanted a career, and so she moved from her small community of Holliston, MA to the big city.\u00a0 She enrolled in nursing school at St. Elizabeth\u2019s Hospital in Brighton, MA.\u00a0 A trolly car ride away from Boston city lights.\u00a0 And the watering hole that she and her roommates would visit on a Saturday night.\u00a0 She was a fun-loving young woman, who loved to dance.<\/p>\n<p>Ellie took her commitment to nursing seriously.\u00a0 And it as a serious time in our nation\u2019s history \u2013 World War II.\u00a0 She joined the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps. Never heard of it?\u00a0 Well, it was\u00a0a federal program established in 1943 to address the shortage of nurses during World War II \u2013 both at home and overseas.\u00a0 It provided subsidized training and a stipend to promising young women who agreed to serve in military or civilian settings during the war.\u00a0By 1945, Cadet Nurses were providing 80% of the nursing care in U.S. hospitals.\u00a0(Read more about it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/articles\/000\/cadet-nurse-corps.htm\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/uscadetnurse.org\/\">here<\/a>.)\u00a0 Ellie served here at home.<\/p>\n<p>And it was here, in her hometown, that Ellie met and married her husband of 54 years.\u00a0 Charlie was a dashing young man, who had served in the Navy and Merchant Marines.\u00a0 Their first of five children was born shortly thereafter.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Mom and the Nurse<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>And Ellie kept working.\u00a0 Getting those kids up, fed, and off to school. Endless laundry and ironing of school uniforms, attending to tummy aches and runny noses, and seeing to the occasional need for a kid\u2019s stitches.\u00a0 Making sure that dinner fixings were there for Charlie to make when he got home from work. Because she had this second job &#8212; \u00a0the one she trained for.<\/p>\n<p>Five days a week (usually including part of a weekend), she donned her nurses uniform, cap, white stockings and shoes for the 3:00-11:00 pm shift &#8212; first as a private duty nurse and then as a floor nurse at the local hospital.\u00a0 And somehow always finding time to attend a glee club concert, a baseball game, or chaperone a kid\u2019s field trip. Hard to estimate the working hours entailed in all that.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Retirement \u2013 What\u2019s That About?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Finally, the kids are grown and out of the house.\u00a0 Time to realize a dream. Retire, build a small house on a lot that Charlie had purchased years earlier, and move to Maine. \u00a0To the place where they had vacationed for a week or two every summer of their married lives. Packing up a car with 5 squabbling kids (who gets to sit in the front seat??) and a trunk full of clothes was a job in itself.<\/p>\n<p>And so they did it.\u00a0 And soon found that full-on retirement was not really their cup of tea.\u00a0 Charlie took a part-time job at a local hardware store.\u00a0 Ellie said she had enough of caregiving and so went to work for the <em>New York Times<\/em>!\u00a0 Well, kind of.\u00a0 She went to work for the local weekly paper &#8211;the <em>York County Star<\/em> \u2013 which was owned by the NYT.\u00a0 She worked in the back and was quickly given supervisory responsibilities for getting the paper out on time. She was given the apt title of \u201cLead Person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After a couple of years, she tried retirement again. But that didn\u2019t last long, either. \u00a0Sitting around \u00a0just wasn\u2019t in her working-class blood.\u00a0 The local Catholic church ran a weekly food pantry, so she volunteered. And quickly became the pantry\u2019s ad hoc manager &#8212; organizing schedules and managing volunteer staff. The staff and clients loved her.\u00a0 And she loved them.\u00a0 To the day of her passing in a nursing home, Ellie had a photo of her beloved food pantry men on the wall by her bed.\u00a0 And despite being bedridden, she still had some &#8220;joie de vivre&#8221; \u2013 singing songs and reminiscing about her life.\u00a0 Which was a good one.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Bottom Line<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Ellie\u2019s story isn\u2019t all that special.\u00a0 So many others of her generation have similar stories to tell. But she was my mom and let me tell you \u2013 she was special to her family and to her many friends and worker colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>She passed away earlier this week.\u00a0 I write this to honor her, thank her, and to celebrate her life.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>99 years, and well more than half of it working.
