On average, over 100 workers are killed every week in the United States due to traumatic injuries suffered at work. More than 20 times as many die from occupational diseases, many due to exposure to hazardous substances many years before they died. The few narratives below (gathered from almost 100 Google News searches) do not come close to capturing the full toll that work takes on the working people of this country. Nevertheless the accounts below gave you a taste of the preventable carnage occurring in workplaces across the country every day.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Worker Dies After Fall In Newark Elevator Shaft<\/h3>\n

Newark, NJ \u2014 A male worker died on May 11 as a result of injuries sustained in an elevator shaft<\/a> at a 12-story former children\u2019s hospital being converted into residences in downtown Newark, New Jersey. Being redeveloped by Newark-based Hanini Group, the 123,500-ft2<\/sup>\u00a0property was initially slated to be converted into a hotel, but, noting its proximity to Newark Penn Station, the developer opted to transform the midcentury building into \u201cthe epitome of transit-oriented luxury living.\u201d The company did not respond to a request for comment on May 12 as the incident remains under investigation.<\/p>\n

Tree trimmer dies after being rescued from 50-foot palm tree<\/h3>\n

Phoenix, AZ \u2014\u00a0 A tree trimmer died after police said he became stuck in a 50-foot palm tree<\/a>. Phoenix police said on Sunday, May 11 that Jaime Yepiz<\/strong>, 43, died of his injuries after he was hospitalized in “extremely critical condition,\u201d according to the Arizona Republic, part of the USA TODAY Network. Yepiz was rescued the day before by Phoenix firefighters, who used chainsaws to free him from the palm tree\u2019s \u201cskirt\u201d, the dried fronds that hang from the trunk, that fell on him. “Firefighters ultimately used chainsaws from the bucket of a ladder truck to cut away palm fronds and secure the man and lower him down from the tree,” Phoenix Fire Department spokesman Capt. The worker was pronounced dead just before 10 a.m. and the incident is now under investigation, officials report. According to a list from the real estate developer, 10 Commerce Court is set to be a luxury apartment building near Newark Penn Station.<\/p>\n

CAL FIRE stated that the worker had fallen about 20 feet into a manhole while working inside the vault. Due to the presence of hydrogen sulfide gas, air monitoring was conducted, and specialized equipment was used by rescue crews during the operation. Authorities confirmed the worker was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of death is under investigation by the coroner\u2019s office, and CAL OSHA is also responding to investigate the workplace incident.<\/p>\n

He also volunteered extensively with youth athletics, coaching and guiding young people both on and off duty. Credeur is survived by his fianc\u00e9e, Danielle Demette, and his brother, Sgt. Joseph Credeur, who also serves with the department. The Louisiana State Police is conducting an investigation into the shooting.<\/p>\n

Two men working on the roof of the First Baptist Church of Camp Springs were electrocuted and killed. Police say the incident was an accident. At around 9 a.m. on Tuesday, two men using a ladder to do roofing work at the church came into contact with a 7,000-volt power line. “They put the ladder up and when they put the ladder up it went in between the two wires. When they went to go lay it onto the roof it hit the wire and then they couldn’t get away from it because they were already charged. They couldn’t get away from it,” said witness Lionel Jewell. Family members say the two men were cousins, originally from El Salvador. The Carroll County, Maryland-based company the men worked for had no comment when reached by FOX 5 DC.<\/p>\n

UTA worker dies from injuries suffered in hit-and-run<\/h3>\n

Murray, UT \u2014 <\/strong><\/span>\u00a0A worker who was critically injured when he was hit by an SUV while working on a railway for the Utah Transit Authority last month has died<\/a>. Madrid was one of two UTA employees working on the rails near the 5900 South rail crossing early in the morning on April 24 when they were hit by an SUV traveling east. Two other employees who witnessed the incident rushed to their side and started providing first aid until medics arrived on scene, UTA said. Both injured employees were taken to the hospital, with one in critical condition and the other in serious condition. One of the men was released from the hospital on April 26, according to a GoFundMe page organized to help pay for the men\u2019s medical bills. That man is \u201cthankfully at home recovering,\u201d UTA\u2019s statement says. The driver who hit the UTA workers initially left the scene of the crash but later turned himself in to Murray police, who are investigating the incident.<\/p>\n

Mexican Navy tall ship crashes into Brooklyn Bridge, killing two Sailors<\/h3>\n

New York City, NY \u2014 <\/strong>Two Mexican sailors died after a<\/a><\/span> Mexican Navy sailing ship festooned with lights and a giant flag crashed into the landmark Brooklyn Bridge <\/a>on Saturday night, shearing the top of its masts. A female cadet and a male Marine died from their injuries, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum told reporters on Sunday. Two of the injured remained in critical condition as of Sunday afternoon, the New York Police Department said. Sheinbaum said Mexico’s Navy was investigating the cause of the crash and that injured cadets were “doing better.” The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board is also investigating. In a social media\u00a0post<\/a>, the LVAC said longtime employee Edgar Quinonez<\/strong> passed away in the midst of the shooting. Quinonez spent 15 years with the locally owned gym chain. His colleagues described him as a source of kindness and a dedicated worker spreading positivity. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said in a news release they arrived at the gym Friday afternoon after receiving reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, police said the suspected gunman exited the gym and tried to run past the officers, leading them to fire at the suspect. After they took him into custody, the suspect was rendered medical aid. He died later at a nearby hospital, police said. It is unclear what the gunman\u2019s motive was. The truck feared to the right, struck a culvert and went airborne. It struck several trees on landing and caught fire, becoming fully engulfed in flames. The victim died at the scene. Littlejohn<\/strong>, 41, of Columbus, Ohio, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. Joye said the incident happened around 4 a.m. at the Qulture Bistro on East Palmetto Street in Florence. He added that one victim with gunshot wounds was located near the door of the building, and six other victims were located inside. All victims were transported to an area hospital for treatment. Florence County Coroner has identified the man killed in the shooting as 39-year-old Melvin Anthony Gibson<\/strong>. Joye said Gibson was the security guard working to keep everyone safe inside the establishment when he lost his life. Gibson\u2019s significant other, Amanda Collins Gibson, said he was a great family man and father, and he\u2019ll be dearly missed.<\/p>\n

In a news release, ISP said it believes the semi was traveling westbound towing a trailer full of frozen food when it entered the center median of the highway for approximately 100 yards before it returned to the westbound lanes, flipped onto its left side and slid for approximately 226 feet. Co-workers on the afternoon shift told the World Socialist Web Site that Williams was one of the highest seniority workers in the plant with 33 years at Ford. His team leader reported that Williams had said good night before walking toward the exit with no sign of pain or discomfort. HANOVER, Pa. (Gray News) – A subcontractor died after falling through a skylight on the Utz potato chip factory roof. According to the York County Coroner\u2019s Office, 34-year-old Trever Staten was part of a crew that was setting up a scaffolding to work on the roof of the Utz factory. Staten was on the roof and fell through a skylight and onto a loading dock area, about 30 to 34 feet below. Staten was taken to the hospital, where he died. According to his obituary, he was a father.<\/p>\n

An official with the Waukee Fire Department confirmed that a piece of equipment fell and struck the worker<\/a>, who has not yet been publicly identified. He was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries. “This loss is profoundly felt throughout the organization, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to all family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time,” an Elder Corp. representative told KCCI. It’s unclear what piece of equipment struck him or what caused the fall. The fire official told KCCI that inspectors with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration were on the scene April 30. PROCTOR, W.Va. \u2014 A Marshall County man is dead after a high pressure water line ruptured<\/a> while he was working at a chemical plant. According to Marshall County Sheriff Mike Dougherty, the victim was Steven Chambers<\/strong>, 44, of Cameron. He was on a ladder performing maintenance on a high-pressure water line at the Westlake Chemical Plant in Proctor. The sheriff said the high pressure line exploded and knocked him off the ladder 10 to 20 feet off the ground. Chambers was taken to a Wetzel County hospital where he was pronounced dead from injuries suffered in the fall. Chambers was on the site working for Boilermakers Local Union #667. New York, NY — Two construction workers died<\/a> after they were found unconscious inside a Little Italy stairwell Saturday afternoon \u2014 with crowds who packed the famed neighborhood on the sunny day seemingly unfazed as first responders hauled their bodies away. The two men \u2014 ages 35 and 34 \u2014 were discovered inside the apartment building at 118 Mulberry St. when police and emergency officials responded to the scene around 3:45 p.m., the NYPD told The Post.
