Instead, he was asked to fold chicken wings on the production line.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">As bird carcasses sped by him, he grabbed, twisted, and folded their wings into the position the company wanted. His quota was 40 wings a minute, or about 18,000 a day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">To meet this benchmark, he had to repeat the same motions thousands of times, putting pressure on his wrists and hands. After about a month, he was diagnosed with tendinitis and carpal tunnel syndrome, hand and wrist injuries resulting from overuse. When he could no longer be of service to the company because of his work-related injuries, he was fired.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The grueling speed of processing lines can inflict debilitating injuries on laborers of all stripes. Workers like Oscar face constant health and safety risks in an industry that systematically exploits them in the name of profit.<\/p>\n<p>So what is the obvious solution? \u00a0Speed up the processing line even more, according to Georgia Republican Congressman Doug Collins. Collins, who may eat chicken, but surely has never worked in a processing plant, has asked Agriculture Secretary and former Georgia Gov.\u00a0<span class=\"rollover-people\" data-behavior=\"rolloverpeople\">Sonny Perdue<\/span>\u00a0to raise line speeds to 175 bpm, almost twice the speed allowed in 1999. (Presumably before humans evolved to be able to handle faster line speeds.)<\/p>\n<p>If you think that sounds like kind of a dumb idea, you&#8217;d be right. So dumb, in fact that the Agriculture Department rejected a similar proposal barely five years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Sound unbelievable? Read all about it in <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/congress-blog\/labor\/350699-put-people-ahead-of-profits-in-poultry\">an article in The Hill by\u00a0Naomi Tsu<\/a>, \u00a0deputy legal director of the Southern Poverty Law Center in Atlanta. \u00a0According to Tsu, poultry workers like Oscar:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">are often among society\u2019s most marginalized members. Plants are typically located in small cities and towns in the midst of rural communities, where economic opportunities are limited. Consequently, these workers are expected to tolerate severe and sometimes unlawful conditions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Increasing line speeds are driven by growing demand for poultry.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1cNTPWP\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/bit.ly\/1cNTPWP&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1505496154268000&amp;usg=AFQjCNF73OtN8MtNVTTZu4PtVgWK6hBjsQ\">Chicken has dethroned beef as America\u2019s favorite meat<\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/reut.rs\/2iGq8mk\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/reut.rs\/2iGq8mk&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1505496154268000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHaHMhjS3kpngM5W7Lu9YCxFO4eaQ\">profits are soaring<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Last year, Tyson Foods, the largest poultry producer in the country, bragged about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/tyson-foods-beats-profit-expectations-boosts-outlook-1454678628\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/tyson-foods-beats-profit-expectations-boosts-outlook-1454678628&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1505496154268000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGMpIZXLkTcPjfAurTP3TBgnVH15Q\">$461 million in profits over a three-month period<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve <a href=\"http:\/\/jordanbarab.com\/confinedspace\/2017\/05\/02\/oil-gas-industry-highest-rate-severe-injuries\/\">read before<\/a> about the terrible conditions under which poultry workers labor.<\/p>\n<p>But the good news is that some organizations are fighting back against putting profit before people.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nelp.org\/news-releases\/39-groups-urge-agriculture-secretary-to-oppose-increasing-line-speeds-in-poultry-plants\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/www.nelp.org\/news-releases\/39-groups-urge-agriculture-secretary-to-oppose-increasing-line-speeds-in-poultry-plants\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1505496154268000&amp;usg=AFQjCNF_b1_mD_O1koealgz9TfILJS7bcw\">A recent letter signed by us and\u00a039 other organizations<\/a>, \u00a0implored Secretary Perdue to take the health concerns of poultry workers more seriously.<\/p>\n<p>Stay tuned.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Normally, I&#8217;d say anyone with half a brain and a bit of a moral compass would see this as a problem in need of a humane solution: When Oscar arrived in Alabama from Miami, he had hoped to apply the mechanical engineering skills he\u2019d learned in Cuba to his new job at a poultry processing [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[167],"tags":[111],"class_list":["post-2030","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-poultry-industry","tag-georgia"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Disabled, Used Up and Discarded: And Conditions for Poultry Workers May Get Worse - Confined Space<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"Working conditions for poultry workers are terrible.
