Just one miner near the surface was able to escape the holocaust that took 239 lives.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;It ranks as the worst coal mining disaster in Pennsylvanian history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Willberg Mine Fire: December 19, 1984<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jordanbarab.com\/confinedspace\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Willberg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4421\" width=\"363\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jordanbarab.com\/confinedspace\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Willberg.jpg 891w, https:\/\/jordanbarab.com\/confinedspace\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Willberg-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jordanbarab.com\/confinedspace\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Willberg-768x506.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jordanbarab.com\/confinedspace\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Willberg-800x527.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 363px) 100vw, 363px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Fire in the Wilberg Mine in Orangeville, Utah&nbsp;kills 27 miners. The tragedy occurred around 9:00 in the morning as a result of an air compressor fire at an air compressor station at the mouth of the 5th Right longwall section of the mine. Twenty-eight miners were present, only one survived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Former MSHA Director Joe Main remembers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\nI was on the Wilberg Mine rescue operation. I remember the grief\/despair of the families when we had to seal the mine without recovering the miners on the eve of Christmas. Was nearly a year later when we recovered the last of the 27 miners.
