And the article extensively quotes a former OSHA official.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">But there\u2019s at least one program already believed to be on the chopping block \u2014 and it\u2019s dedicated to worker safety, said Jordan Barab, the Labor Department\u2019s former deputy assistant secretary of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. \u201cThe Susan Harwood grant program, started in the 1980s, provides $10 million a year for safety training for workers,\u201d Barab said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ra-nativo ic\" style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">\u00a0Under the Obama administration, the grant program \u2014 which doles out funds to non-profit groups, unions and other organizations to provide worker safety training \u2014 focused on those considered vulnerable to job exploitation, Barab said.<\/div>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">\u201cWe tried to address concerns of workers like day laborers, or non- or limited-English speaking workers \u2014 basically those that OSHA had a hard time reaching and who don\u2019t have the same access to information about their rights as other workers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">It\u2019s the last issue in particular that keeps him up at night, he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">\u201cIt\u2019s not just about providing training on how to stay safe \u2014 it\u2019s training to make sure workers know they have rights that protect them,\u201d Barab said.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Foxes. Henhouse. Repeat:<\/strong> EPA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/05\/07\/us\/politics\/epa-dismisses-members-of-major-scientific-review-board.html?_r=1#pq=YsOhel\">dismissed\u00a0at least five members of a major scientific review board<\/a>, a spokesperson stating that EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt &#8220;would consider replacing the academic scientists with representatives from industries whose pollution the agency is supposed to regulate, as part of the wide net it plans to cast. &#8216;The administrator believes we should have people on this board who understand the impact of regulations on the regulated community,'&#8221; \u00a0Representatives of polluters sitting on EPA&#8217;s scientific review board?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u00a0 Representatives of polluters on EPA&#8217;s science panels? What could go wrong?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u00a0 Oh, and just to make sure small innocent children aren&#8217;t contaminated with any climate change filth, EPA has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/energy-environment\/wp\/2017\/05\/06\/epa-buries-climate-change-site-for-kids\/?utm_term=.3a929b92acec\">buried its\u00a0website<\/a> aimed at teaching schoolchildren about climate change.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Protecting Workers By Taking Away Their Protections:<\/strong> President Trump has been\u00a0trying to cozy up to the Building and Construction Trades unions (and not so much the service sector or public sector unions). But he&#8217;s probably not going to be successful the way he&#8217;s going. AFL-CIO President Rich Trumka\u00a0points out that Trump&#8217;s\u00a0solution to all worker issues is<a href=\"http:\/\/triblive.com\/local\/westmoreland\/12252755-74\/manufacturing-talks-with-trump-not-very-satisfying-alf-cio-leader-says\"> taking away worker protections.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cHe only talked about eliminating regulations,\u201d AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka told the Tribune-Review during a stop in Southwestern Pennsylvania. \u201cHe thought if he did that, manufacturing would come out.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u00a0 \u00a0And not only is he fixated on taking away worker protections, but he&#8217;s not doing too well at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/wonk\/wp\/2017\/05\/08\/trump-slammed-this-indiana-factory-on-twitter-union-leaders-say-hes-all-talk\/?utm_term=.dc6feb276a82\">keeping\u00a0American jobs <\/a>from heading South to Mexico either. This may be a love affair that\u00a0is never consumated.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>On Notice:<\/strong> Beryllium stakeholders &#8212; both trying to repeal parts of the new OSHA standard and defending the standard &#8212; are <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/administration\/332381-groups-head-to-white-house-over-beryllium-exposure-rule\">meeting with OMB this week<\/a>. The Associated Builders and Contractors are claiming that OSHA did not give notice to the industry before including construction in the standard. As <a href=\"http:\/\/jordanbarab.com\/confinedspace\/2017\/04\/28\/trump-workers-day-get-sick-die\/\">Confined Space<\/a> noted previously, this is not true.\u00a0The original OSHA beryllium <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2015\/08\/07\/2015-17596\/occupational-exposure-to-beryllium-and-beryllium-compounds\">proposal<\/a> did not cover maritime or construction \u2014 and the industry claims that insufficient \u201cnotice\u201d was given that they might be covered. \u00a0If you read the OSHA proposal, however, you will note that there are numerous places where coverage of shipyard and construction workers is presented as an alternative, and comments are requested. Comments were, in fact, provided at the hearings and in written form as the new standard was being considered. The National Employment Law Project also met with OMB yesterday to defend the standard.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Who lives and who dies at work is not an accident of chance:<\/strong> How does<a href=\"http:\/\/inthesetimes.com\/working\/entry\/20099\/why_inequality_in_the_workforce_is_bad_for_your_health\"> inequality affect health and safety in the workplace<\/a>? The emergence of increasingly precarious forms of employment in convoluted supply chains was as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/article-abstract\/1149152\">deliberate as it was deadly<\/a>.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>It creates a working world where the bad actors set a wage, conditions and employment rights benchmark which sucks down conditions across the global economy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">Maintaining a system of indecent work has always required an extra ingredient\u2014a divided workforce. Where workers do not have a collective voice and where jobs are by design segregated by gender, race or class those divisions can perpetuate disadvantage and leave the most exploited workers powerless while undercutting the conditions of the rest.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Holding it In?\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Being able to go to the bathroom when you need to &#8212; even when you&#8217;re at work &#8212; seems \u00a0like an easy one. So what&#8217;s the problem. Well, if you work\u00a0work at mobile or transient workplaces, such as transit workers and construction workers (especially women), or if you&#8217;re \u00a0injured and disabled workers, ; transgender or an\u00a0older worker at stationary work settings, it may not be so easy. And it&#8217;s not just discomfort, there are serious health concerns associated with not being able to go to the bathroom. NYCOSH is holding a forum on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/1OroEEAXn0N4WGXOAAoKeFcES_IvxBMuaPJZOPfFeVjk\/viewform?edit_requested=true\">Bathroom Rights: Equitable Access and Health Risks in the Workplace<\/a>\u00a0on Thursday May 11 to explore the issue of access to the bathroom and the health risks associated with \u201cholding it in.\u201d \u00a0 If you&#8217;re in the neighborhood, stop in.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Workers Comp Unconstitutional?<\/strong> \u00a0An Alabama judge has declared the state&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.al.com\/business\/index.ssf\/2017\/05\/judge_rules_states_workers_com.html#incart_river_home\">Workers Comp law unconstitutional<\/a>. But that may be a good thing. Circuit Judge Pat Ballard found two provisions, the $220 a week cap in compensation and the 15 percent cap on attorneys fees, unconstitutional. \u00a0Lawyers for the workers successfully argued that the $220 cap was determined in 1987, but \u00a0living costs and wages far exceed that number now. They argued a similar cap would total just under $500 today. Ballard\u00a0stayed his order 120 days so the Alabama Legislature can correct the problems.
