37+ years in industrial security. Our plant had lots of street crossing for RRs. The company maintained them and we had to park our squad cars, turn on the emergency lights, and wave our arms and RR fusees and flashlights at the traffic. I was struck twice (no serious injury) and lots of crazies just whizzing past and nearly hitting the work crews or the big equipment with them.
Rule #1 Never turn your back to traffic!!!
I believe that all road workers need to be protected physically from traffic. I rarely see that in the real world.
