Fourth TECO worker dies after accident at plant
Tampa, FL — A fourth person has died from the TECO Apollo Beach industrial accident on June 29. Frank Lee Jones, 55, died Saturday, according to a company spokeswoman. Christopher Irvin, 42, and Michael McCort, 60, died the day of the accident. Antonio Navarette, 21, died Wednesday. Our news partners at The Tampa Bay Times say Jones was a contract worker with Gaffin Industrial Services in Riverview for 27 years.
Perryville firefighter killed while operating tow truck on I-95 in Cecil County
PERRYVILLE, Md. (WBFF) – A longtime Perryville volunteer died while operating a tow truck Sunday morning on I-95 in Cecil County, just north of the Millard Tydings Bridge over the Susquehanna River. Brian Williams has “been a member of this company continuously since 1985,” said Perryville Mayor Jim Eberhardt, noting that Williams was serving as a fire lieutenant and EMS captain. “He was a volunteer in the community for a long, long time, in many different areas.” He was also a member of Collette’s Service Center, working as a tow-truck driver. Williams, 51, was retrieving a 1993 purple Chevrolet Camaro with his Freightliner tow truck when both he and his truck were hit by a 2001 Jeep Cherokee driven by Eric Schlerf, 37, of Bel Air, reported Maryland State Police.

WOLFFORTH, TX (KCBD) – A worker with Allen Butler Construction Inc. has died after falling in the path of machinery near Highway 62 and Private Road 1320. Wolfforth Police Chief Rick Scott says 20-year-old Dillon Juarez was killed in the accident on Friday afternoon.
Phoenix smoke shop employee shot and killed, investigation underway
PHOENIX, AZ – Police are investigating after a Phoenix smoke shop employee was shot and killed on Friday night. Police say just before 10:30 p.m. they responded to an alarm at the A&N smoke shop near 7th Avenue and Hatcher Road. As officers arrived, they found an employee deceased inside with apparent gunshot injuries. In an update Saturday afternoon, police identified the victim as 35-year-old Ahmed Fahmi.

A wife, mother, grandmother and public servant was killed on the Fourth of July. 60-year-old Comal County Corrections Officer Cynthia Young was hit and killed by a driver after the fireworks show in Marble Falls Tuesday night.Comal County Sheriff Mark Reynolds served with 60-year-old Cynthia Young for nearly 10 years. She joined the department in 2009 as a nurse and then worked as a corrections officer.
Danville utilities employee dies while working on powerline
DANVILLE, Va. – City of Danville Power and Light employee Samuel Thompson was electrocuted Thursday morning while working on a power line on Applewood Drive in Pittsylvania County. The accident took place around 8 a.m. Thompson and a co-worker were responding to a power outage in the neighborhood. Utilities Director Jason Grey said Thompson was inside the elevated bucket truck when the accident occurred. Utility, fire and rescue crews responded.
Bourbon Virus Linked to Death of Park Official – CDC Testing Tick Samples
Sullivan, MO –The daughter of Tamela Wilson, 58, Sullivan, has confirmed her mother died from complications relating to the Bourbon virus contracted by a tick bite. Wilson was the assistant park superintendent at Meramec State Park in Sullivan. She had lived and worked in the park for 10 years. Wilson’s daughter, Amy May, who is a registered nurse, said the cause of death is listed as respiratory failure, but she feels it was brought on by the tick-borne virus.

New Stanton, PA — A truck driver from Parma, Ohio, died early Friday morning when the tractor trailer he was driving swerved off the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Westmoreland County. State police at New Stanton said Ralph J. Baker, 61, was driving in the eastbound lanes around 12:40 a.m. when, for unknown reasons, the truck swerved abruptly off the right side of the road then hit a guide rail in Penn Township.

Richmond sanitation worker dies after falling into a wastewater tank
RICHMOND, Ind. — A sanitation worker (Danny Caldwell)for the City of Richmond died on Wednesday after falling into a wastewater tank. According to the city of Richmond, Danny Caldwell was performing regular maintenance on a wastewater clarifier tank when personnel lost contact with him. Emergency personnel found Caldwell submerged in the tank and first responders recovered his body late Wednesday evening.
20-year-old killed in industrial accident, officials say
BROWNSVILLE, Wis. – A 20-year-old man was killed Thursday afternoon in an industrial accident in Dodge County, officials said. Dodge County sheriff’s deputies were called just after 12:30 p.m. to Michels Corporation at 817 Main St. in Brownsville for an industrial accident, according to a release. The 20-year-old man involved in the accident died at the scene, officials said. Workers with All Tools, LLC, of Fond du Lac, a subcontractor of Michels Corporation, were cleaning pipes when one of the pipes fell off a jack and slid into the 20-year-old, according to the release.

CANTON, N.Y. — Three people killed in an Oswego County crash were employees of a north country ambulance company returning from a call in Syracuse, according to news outlets. State police identified three dead St. Lawrence County residents as Corey E. Moore, 50, of Canton; Gregg P. Williams, 58, of De Kalb Junction; and Roderick C. Cota, 63, of Norwood.

Worker dies after he’s stung by swarm of bees in Thermal date orchard
Thermal, CA – A man working at a date orchard in Riverside County died this week after being stung by a swarm of bees, his family and fire officials said. Gerardo Balbuena, 49, was working the fields at a date palm orchard in Thermal just after 9 a.m. Monday when he came across a beehive, said his daughter, Marilou Balbuena. He was stung by at least 30 bees, she said. After he was attacked, Balbuena went into cardiac arrest, said Tawny Cabral, a spokeswoman for the Riverside County Fire Department. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Balbuena’s official cause of death has not been determined. The Thermal resident’s daughter said he was allergic to bee stings.

NEW YORK – A New York City police officer was shot dead early on Wednesday morning by a gunman who was killed by police as he ran from the scene, an attack the city’s top police official called an assassination. The officer, Miosotis Familia, 48, a 12-year veteran of the force, was shot in the head as she sat in a mobile command truck in the Bronx borough with her partner at about 12:30 a.m. EDT (0430 GMT), the New York Police Department said. “This was an unprovoked direct attack on police officers who were assigned to keep the people of this city safe,” Police Commissioner James O’Neill told a news conference. Earlier on Twitter, he said that Familia had been “assassinated.”

ANTIOCH, Calif. (KGO) — The widow and three children of an Antioch Valero gas station employee who was shot and killed Monday night during a robbery say they are devastated and at a loss as to why anyone would kill their loved one. Mohammad Jawad Ataie’s family says he came to the United States from Afghanistan in the late 1990s. He worked at the gas station on East 18th Street and Hillcrest Avenue in Antioch for about five years. His family says he often worked 10 to 12 hour shifts more than five days a week to provide for them.

Northville officer killed while helping motorist
NORTHVILLE, NY — A veteran police officer died Monday when he was struck by a vehicle on Route 30 while helping a motorist who had hit a deer. Bob Johnson, who had previously worked in Gloversville and for the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, was driving home after a shift with the Northville Police when he stopped to aid a motorist who hit a deer. While trying to help, Johnson was struck by another vehicle moments later. The 60-year-old Johnson was killed instantly.

TROY TOWNSHIP, IL – A semitrailer driver from Princeton was killed Saturday when his truck collided with another vehicle and tumbled into a ravine. The driver was identified as Mark L. Booth on Monday by the Will County Coroner’s office. Booth was traveling westbound on Interstate 80 when the accident occurred in a Troy Township section of the highway. He was pronounced dead at 1:10 p.m. Saturday.

BECKER CO., Minn. — We now know the name of a man killed in a trench collapse in Becker County on Friday. Authorities say he was 25-year-old Donovan Weber of Ogema. Weber became trapped in the trench at a farm near Richwood, Minnesota when the trench suddenly collapsed. Co-workers attempted to free him from the trench. After lifesaving efforts were performed, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Eugene, OR — Authorities have identified Ronald Schulty as the man who died on Monday in a work-related accident at the Eugene Country Club. Schulty of Keizer was found dead at the club at 255 Country Club Road shortly before 8 a.m. Monday, police spokeswoman Melinda McLaughlin said Wednesday. His death “appears to have been an accident,” but how he died has yet to be determined, she said. Eugene Springfield Fire spokesman Ray Brown said that Schulty, an employee of JB Instant Lawn, was found dead upon the fire department’s arrival.

CALDWELL COUNTY, NC ) – A 51-year-old man was killed when a tree fell on him in a logging accident in Caldwell County Monday morning. According to the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened around 10:30 a.m. along Setzers Creek Road in Lenoir. Deputies said the man, identified as James Wilson Coffey Jr, was killed on a hillside while he was cutting down several trees. Investigators said one of the trees fell and he was struck and killed.
