On average, over 100 workers are killed every week in the United States due to traumatic injuries suffered at work. More than 20 times as many die from occupational diseases, many due to exposure to hazardous substances many years before they died. The few narratives below (gathered from almost 100 Google News searches) do not come close to capturing the full toll that work takes on the working people of this country. Nevertheless the accounts below gave you a taste of the preventable carnage occurring in workplaces across the country every day.

Worker killed in trench collapse at Mabank construction site

Mabank, TX — A construction worker died in a trench collapse in Mabank on Wednesday. According to Mabank police, officers and fire and rescue were dispatched to the 1000 block of North State Highway 198 at 10:29 a.m., where a worker was trapped in a trench collapse. Rescue crews extricated the worker and began life-saving measures on the man and he was taken to a Gun Barrel City hospital. The man, Abraham Gomez Cruz, 38, of Hutchins, died at the hospital. The incident is under investigation to determine the cause of the collapse.

Worker killed in Jackson by file cabinet

JACKSON, Mich. (WILX) – A 46-year-old student support specialist in Jackson died after a metal file cabinet fell on top of them. According to the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA), the incident happened on April 30. Emergency services were called, and the employee was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy indicated the cause of death to be traumatic (compression) chest asphyxia from the file cabinet. This is the eleventh worker death in Michigan so far in 2025.

Construction worker dies after being injured at Michigan high school

Potterville, MI — More details have emerged regarding the death of a construction worker at a Michigan high school. According to a report from the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the death a 27-year-old at a gym at Potterville High School on June 16 is the 12th workplace fatality of 2025. The MIOSHA report indicates that two employees were working on an aerial lift setting steel trusses when the incident occurred. Several unsecured steel trusses fell and struck both employees, trapping them in the aerial lift. Both were hospitalized and the condition of the second employee is unknown. The report also says that a few hours before the fatal incident, there was a near miss when unsecured steel trusses fell, one landing on the ground and one landing on an aerial lift occupied by the two employees. The fatal incident occurred during a second attempt to secure the trusses, the report said. The workers were employees of Eagle Enterprises, but Lansing-based Clark Construction is overseeing the job. Neither worker has been identified by name. Officials in Eaton County are investigating.

Construction worker’s body found inside house cistern

Hallsville, MO — Firefighters in Hallsville, Missouri, have recovered the body of a construction worker who fell into a home’s water-filled cistern on Monday. The Boone County Fire Protection District said firefighters were called to the scene near the intersection of Hallsville and Elm streets Monday morning to reports of a missing construction worker. They met with a construction worker on the scene who said he had left the site briefly and, upon returning, was unable to find his coworker. Firefighters and Hallsville Police Department officers worked quickly to search the area for the missing worker, but couldn’t find them, according to a press release from the department. Due to evidence at the scene, it didn’t appear that the worker had left the area. “Fire crews then began pumping water from the cistern using trash pumps,” the press release said. “During this operation, the body of an adult male was discovered deceased in the water-filled cistern.” First responders recovered the body and transported it to the Boone County Medical Examiner’s Office for an ongoing investigation into the cause of death. The district said the Hallsville Police Department is leading the investigation and will release the identity of the victim when appropriate.

Roadside Construction worker hit and killed on the job

Cedar Rapids, IA — A construction worker has died in a workplace accident at the intersection of I-380 and Wright Brothers Boulevard Thursday afternoon. According to Cedar Rapids Police, the accident took place at approximately 2:19 p.m. When officers arrived on scene, they found one person had died as a result of an industrial accident. Police confirmed the accident involved a construction worker walking near a large piece of road construction equipment. Police said there is no criminal aspect to this case.

Fatal accident at U.S. Steel plant claims life of Fairfield father

Fair Field, AL — A tragic industrial accident claimed the life of 39-year-old Michael Dewaine Townsend on Monday at the U.S. Steel plant in Fairfield, according to AL.com. Townsend’s death marks a second devastating loss for his children, who also lost their mother to illness last year. Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Matt Angelo confirmed that Townsend, a father of four, died after the railcar he was riding struck another railcar, causing fatal blunt force injuries. He was transported to Princeton Baptist Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 11:14 p.m. The incident is currently under investigation by U.S. Steel, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Angelo said.

Construction worker killed in accident off I-380

Cedar Rapids, IA — One person was killed Thursday in an industrial accident at the construction site off I-380 and Wright Brothers Boulevard, according to the Cedar Rapids Police Department. First responders were called to the site at 2:19 p.m. Thursday, where they found a road worker had died after being hit by a large piece of construction equipment. The name of the deceased worker has not been released. The accident happened on a part of the construction area that was not directly on the roadway, and was not a result of traffic being constricted in the area, according to the police department. The Iowa Occupational Safety and Health Administration received a report about the fatality and is investigating the incident, according to a spokesperson. No other information has been released about the investigation.

Man dies after falling off 15-foot ladder at St. Augustine City Hall

St. Augustine, FL — A man hospitalized after falling from a 15-foot ladder in the courtyard of St. Augustine City Hall died Friday, according to the company he worked for. Blanchard Caulking and Coating, a commercial waterproofing business, confirmed to First Coast News Friday afternoon that their employee died following the incident. St. Johns County Fire Rescue said the man was taken to Flagler Hospital after falling off the ladder. He was in life-threatening condition and his employer confirmed later that he died. The St. Augustine Police Department said on Facebook that city hall would close at noon and reopen 8 a.m. Monday.

Two PennDOT employees killed in truck accident

Venango County, PA — PennDOT employees Robert Greenlee and Seth Baughman were killed in a truck accident in Venango County. According to state police, the employees were driving along Route 965 in Mineral Township on Wednesday. One of the tires malfunctioned and sent the vehicle off the road into a ditch, hitting a tree. A PennDOT representative says their thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of Greenlee and Baughman.

City Tree Trimmer Dies After Suffering Critical Injuries On Job In Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon, NY — Juan Peralta Sr., a longtime employee of the Mount Vernon Department of Public Works, died after being critically hurt while performing tree trimming duties near the intersection of 5th Avenue and 5th Street on Tuesday, June 17, according to a statement from the city on Friday, June 20. Peralta was rushed to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery but tragically succumbed to his injuries. “This is a devastating loss for the Mount Vernon team, the Peralta family, and our community,” said Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard on Friday, also adding, “His work ethic and passion for this work, his family, and this community were exceptional. He will be sorely missed.” Peralta brought more than 55 years of experience as an arborist and horticulturist. Before joining the city over a decade ago, he worked for Alpine Tree Service for 35 years and spent 20 years at the New York Botanical Gardens. He started with the city as a part-time laborer and rose to Motor Equipment Operator, eventually becoming a tree trimmer, a role he held until his death. City officials said he was known for his reliability, humility, and deep commitment to public service.

Dump truck driver killed in Old Fort had 30 years of experience

McDowel County, NC — Officials identified a dump truck driver killed Tuesday morning along Interstate 40 in McDowell County. Ralph Hibbert, 65, of Georgia, was driving the truck to help with Helene recovery when his brakes went out near Old Fort and flipped, crashing into a building under construction. He died at the scene. Hibbert had 30 years of experience, ABC affiliate WLOS reported. Hibbert avoided multiple cars stopped on the Exit 73 ramp.

Philadelphia truck driver killed in Southbury tractor-trailer crash on I-84, police say

Southbury, CT — Connecticut State Police have released the name of the Pennsylvania driver of a tractor-trailer who was killed earlier this week in a crash on Interstate 84. He was identified as Brian Lloyd, 60, of Philadelphia. A news release indicated Lloyd was taken to the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The crash was reported to state police around 4:50 a.m. Wednesday in the eastbound lanes of I-84 east of Exit 15, the agency said in a news release. State police said Lloyd was driving a Volvo VNL tractor-trailer in the left lane when the truck veered into the median. It then veered right across both lanes and struck “an overhead illumination pole,” and went through the metal beam guardrail, state police said. The tractor-trailer continued down an embankment and into a wooded area, state police said.

Flight Instructor and student killed in plane crash

Tucson, AZ — The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed the identities of two people who died in a plane crash near Green Valley. The deceased have been identified as 41-year-old Miguel Ornelas, the student pilot and owner of the plane, and 74-year-old Roberto Guerrero, the flight instructor. The crash happened in a remote area, which poses challenges for investigators. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a Cessna 150 crashed near Green Valley, Arizona, around 4:45 p.m. local time on Thursday, June 19. The FAA said two people were on board and both were killed. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will investigate the crash, with the NTSB leading the investigation and providing further updates. Authorities are currently working to reach the crash site and begin their investigation. Further updates are expected as more information becomes available.

Worker struck by truck on Cleveland’s East Side

Cleveland, OH — A 50-year-old man was on the road and assisting backing up a work truck, when he was accidentally run over by the truck. The accident happened around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 2100 block of Adelbert Rd. This is outside University Hospitals on the Case Western Reserve University campus. The victim was immediately rushed to the emergency room. His name and condition have not been released. Case confirmed that the work was being done at the university.  Cleveland Police have not yet been able to to tell 19 News if they have taken anyone into custody or filed any charges. Cleveland Police said their investigation is ongoing.

Wyoming truck driver killed in Sublette County rollover Monday

Marbleton, WY  — A Wyoming resident was the sole victim of a belly dump trailer rollover on a Sublette County highway yesterday, June 16. According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, the driver overcorrected into a rollover and then into an embankment. The man was identified as 37-year-old Wyoming resident Dale Simkin. Simkin was reportedly driving a belly dump trailer transporting a full load of road base eastward on Wyoming Highway 351 near Marbleton when he accidentally drifted into the southern edge of the highway. He attempted to correct the Kenworth combination truck’s course back into the appropriate lane, but could not get the truck back over the edge. The truck tipped onto its right side as it traveled along the steep embankment, which dumped the load onto the southern edge of the roadway. It would then strike a culvert ditch, which launched it into another flip, this time on the driver’s side. The truck would then finally come to rest, settled on the driver’s side and facing east. The WHP did not indicate any other contributing factor to this incident, including weather or road conditions. The crash occurred at 12:04 p.m., suggesting visibility was not a concern either. Simkin was not wearing a seat belt. There have been 45 highway fatalities in Wyoming so far in 2025.

Dump Truck Driver killed in single Vehicle Crash

Washtenaw County, MI —A dump truck driver was killed after losing control of the truck and striking a tree Monday evening on US-23 in Washtenaw County, Michigan. According to Michigan State Police, the crash happened sometime before 6:45 p.m. on the southbound highway at the Northfield Rest Area. MSP says the 47-year-old driver from Flint was traveling in a 1994 Western Star dump truck when a tire popped, causing him to drive off the road and hit a tree. Authorities with the Ann Arbor Township and Northfield Township fire departments arrived at the scene and worked to remove the man from the truck. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to MSP. An investigation is ongoing. Authorities do not believe alcohol and drugs were factors in the crash.

Worker killed in construction accident on I-26 near Weber Blvd. overpass

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A worker died last week following an accident at a construction site near I-26 eastbound in North Charleston. Officers with the North Charleston Police Department responded to the scene under the Weber Boulevard overpass on the afternoon of June 16. Once there, police learned that the victim was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition; however, the victim did not survive the accident. A report from NCPD said a “skid steer” construction vehicle, being used by an operator, was clearing mud from a ditch when the vehicle backed up and ran the victim over. That person was identified by the Charleston County Coroner’s Office as 58-year-old John Stowers from Summerville. the incident is under investigation.

Lowe’s in South Carolina was scene of West Virginia man’s death, coroner says

Aiken, SC — A man was killed Sunday at a Lowe’s Home Improvement store in South Carolina, according to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office. Ray C. Straight, a 43-year-old West Virginia resident, is the man who died in what Coroner Darryl Ables called an accident. At about 5 p.m., members of the North Augusta Department of Public Safety and Aiken County EMS responded to a construction accident at the Lowe’s at 1220 Knox Ave., the coroner’s office said in a news release. That’s not far from the state line between South Carolina and Georgia. First responders administered CPR, but Straight died at the scene, according to the release. No other injuries were reported. Information about the construction accident, and if Straight was a construction worker, was not available.

Employee Shot and killed on the job

Odenton, MD — A 45-year-old woman from Middle River, Maryland, was shot and killed Monday morning in a workplace incident at Smith Bus Service in Odenton. Anne Arundel County Police responded to the 1800 block of Bucklina Avenue at approximately 10:13 a.m. after receiving reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found Monyette Marie Stephenson, 45, suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency personnel pronounced her dead at the scene. Investigators quickly obtained and reviewed video surveillance, which identified the shooter as her 48-year-old estranged husband, Trimall Stephenson, who was also an employee of the bus company. Law enforcement tracked the suspect to a rest stop in Hamilton, New Jersey. As New Jersey State Police approached the vehicle, the man turned a firearm on himself and died by suicide. Authorities have notified the next of kin for both individuals. This is the 8th homicide in Anne Arundel County this year.

1 dead, 1 injured in Clearwater Publix construction accident

Clearwater, FL — A man working at the construction site of a new Clearwater Publix died after a scissor lift collapsed Monday. Another worker was injured in the accident. Clearwater police and Clearwater Fire and Rescue responded to the construction accident about 5 p.m. Monday at the job site at 1295 S. Missouri Ave., according to a news release from the city of Clearwater. Investigators believe Victor Hugo Martinez Gelves of Davenport and Gustavo Esmir Linarez Castillo of Orlando were injured when the lift collapsed. Both were taken to local hospitals as trauma alerts. Martinez Gelves, 38, was taken to Morton Plant Hospital, where he died less than an hour after arriving. Linarez Castillo, 43, was taken to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital. He sustained injuries that were not life-threatening, officials said. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration was notified, according to the release.
