We at Confined Space World Headquarters wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving!

There is much to be thankful for in Confined Space World this Thanksgiving:

  • That we have an agency in this country that seeks to guarantee workers right to a safe workplace.
  • That many workers are represented by unions who protect their rights, their dignity and their lives (and the many union members who made the food we’re eating for today’s meal.)
  • That we have a free press and fine journalists able to tell workers’ stories.
  • That we at least have the Senate which can continue to confirm good judges and defend against Republican attempts to weaken workers’ rights.
  • That we have a President (and many legislators) who understand, defend and promote labor unions.

But at the same time, let’s remember

  • The tens of thousands of families who will be missing family members this Thanksgiving — loved ones who went to work and never came home, or died of diseases contracted at work.
  • The millions of public employees who are still not covered by OSHA
  • The tens of millions of workers who want to be represented by unions but fall victim to anti-union
  • How terribly underfunded OSHA is and how much the law needs to be updated.
  • The need to fight back against anti-OSHA, anti-union, corporate and Republican interests that never stop trying to undermine labor unions, worker rights and the agencies assigned to protect them.

So eat up, spend quality time with your family, watch football, eat leftovers, relax — and then get back to work on Monday. There is much to be done…

  1. At the risk of sounding self-serving, how about some thanks for the safety professionals out there, many of whom have dedicated their entire work lives to protecting employees. And thanks to their families, some of whom have had to do without when mom or dad lost their job when his/her boss got tired of being “persuaded” and/or challenged concerning unethical practices.

  2. Happy Thanksgiving right back at you Jordan. I’m grateful for all the things you mentioned. I’m also grateful for your safety evangelism through Confined Space, and its call to action.
