3 firefighters killed in Colorado as wildfires stoked by heat, wind rage across the West

BEAVER, UT — Blistering heat and strong winds Sunday stoked wildfires across the West after three firefighters were killed a day earlier in Colorado while battling a blaze along the state’s border with Utah. The National Weather Service said wildfire conditions “remain critical” across the Southwest, with risk high in the Four Corners region where Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah intersect. The agency warned of “extreme fire behavior” along the Utah-Colorado border, where “rapid fire growth is likely.” The firefighters were killed and two sustained burn injuries when they were overcome Saturday by flames from fast-moving fires. They deployed emergency protective shelters during the so-called burnover — which occurs when a fire spreads and closes off all escape routes — in Mesa County, the U.S. Interior Department said. They worked for the U.S. Wildland Fire Service and U.S. Forest Service and were part of an interagency response to the Knowles and Gore fires, which merged with other fires to form the Snyder Fire. So far, about 44 square miles (114 square kilometers) have burned.

Okanogan County mourns loss of employee in landfill fire response

OKANOGAN COUNTY, WA — The Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) says a “valued six-year employee” of Okanogan County Public Works has passed away while responding to a fire early Tuesday morning. OCSO says that on Monday at 6:15 p.m., the Okanogan County 911 Communications Center received reports of a fire at the Okanogan County Landfill. Crews say they arrived on the scene and extinguished the fire. According to a press release, on Tuesday at 1:33 a.m., Okanogan County 911 got reports that the fire rekindled, so crews and landfill staff responded to the scene for suppression efforts. The press release also states that at 2:34 a.m., a landfill water tender, operated by 73-year-old Larry Fingar, left a “facility roadway” and rolled down an embankment. OCSO says that law enforcement and emergency medical personnel responded to the scene, but Fingar was pronounced dead at the scene.

Man dies at hospital after being electrocuted inside Upstate Walmart, coroner says

LAURENS, SC — A man has died after being electrocuted at the Walmart in Laurens, South Carolina, according to the coroner. The Laurens County Coroner’s Office said Cesar Siso Barcelo, 40, of Easley, died at Prisma Health Laurens County Memorial Hospital around 11 p.m. Wednesday. The coroner’s office said the investigation showed that an electrical incident happened at about 10:20 p.m. at the Walmart on East Main Street. Barcelo was taken to the hospital, where he died. The cause of death was determined to be electrocution. The coroner’s office said the death was construction-related and that the store is undergoing remodeling. The incident remains under investigation by the Laurens County Coroner’s Office and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Fire chief expecting 3rd child fatally struck by car while directing traffic

MABANK, TX  – A Texas fire chief and police officer whose wife is expecting their third child died after he was hit by a car while directing traffic. Mabank Fire Chief Charlie Woodard was directing traffic Saturday night after the Mabank Rodeo when he was struck by a car, according to Juan Gutierrez, a spokesperson for the Texas Department of Public Safety. He was rushed to the hospital but died of his injuries. Woodard also served as the city’s fire marshal and as a police officer.

Man killed in accident on crane barge in Hackberry, officials say

HACKBERRY, LA — A man was killed in an accident on a crane barge on the Calcasieu Ship Channel Tuesday, officials said. Marlon Benoit died in the accident in Hackberry, and no foul play is suspected, the Cameron Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed. The Coast Guard is leading the investigation because it happened on the water.

22-year-old worker dies at construction site in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) recently shared preliminary details of two worker deaths, one of which occurred in Grand Rapids. On June 18, a 22-year-old worker — who has not been identified — was killed at a construction site in Grand Rapids, according to MIOSHA. They said that the worker drove a pickup truck and trailer onto a construction worksite to unload an excavator, and moments later, was found pinned beneath the hydraulic arm of the trailer’s liftgate. MIOSHA did not share any details as to how the worker was pinned.

Pilgrim’s Prideworker dies at Cold Spring plant after being pinned under equipment

COLD SPRING, MN — A 29-year-old worker died early Thursday at the Pilgrim’s Pride chicken processing plant in Cold Spring, in central Minnesota. The Cold Spring/Richmond Police Department responded to a medical emergency at the plant shortly after 1 a.m. Police said the employee was pinned under equipment in the plant’s loading dock area. The man’s coworkers removed him from under the equipment, and emergency responders provided medical care. But he was pronounced dead at the scene. The worker was later identified to be Jesse Leal.

Madison County man fatally injured in farming accident Thursday

MADISON COUNTY, IA — A farmer is dead after he became trapped and died while working on his Madison County farm Thursday night. The Madison County Sheriff’s Office said first responders were dispatched at about 9:15 p.m. to a call reporting a man injured by a skid loader in the 3000 block of Heritage Ave., which is around 12 miles southwest of Winterset. On arrival, crews found that 69-year-old Ronald Bane of Lorimor had become trapped by his skid loader and was unable to free himself until his family found him. Authorities said Bane, who is believed to have been alone at the time of the accident, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

West Barren farmer dies in farming accident

GLASGOW, KY — A Barren County farmer has died after a hay wrapping accident in western Barren County. The man has been identified as Dennis Smith, according to Barren County Coroner Tim Gibson. Local authorities say Smith was working with a hay wrapper when he reached into the machine while it was still running for unknown reasons and became caught, suffering crush injuries. It is not clear exactly when the accident happened.

19-year-old utility worker dies after hit-and-run in Aiken

AIKEN, SC — A 19-year-old utility worker was killed after a hit-and-run incident early Friday morning, the Aiken County Coroner’s Office has confirmed. According to the coroner’s office, officials responded to the area of Rutland Drive and Northland Boulevard in at approximately 5:46 a.m. on June 26. An unknown vehicle was traveling west when it struck two contract utility workers in the work zone and allegedly left the scene. One worker was pronounced deceased on the scene at 6:27 a.m. from blunt force trauma. He has been identified as Billy H. Norris of Chesnee, S.C.

Houston construction worker killed during overnight Gulf Freeway project

HOUSTON, TX — A construction worker was killed overnight after being hit by a work truck on the Gulf Freeway, according to Houston police. The crash happened around 11 p.m. Sunday in the southbound lanes of Interstate 45 before the Dixie Farm Road exit. Police said a construction crew was working on a lane closure when a truck being used to protect workers from traffic was backing up and hit one of the workers. The victim was identified as a 36-year-old man. His name was not shared so his family could be notified.

Montgomery Co. deputy struck and killed while investigating DWI crash on North Freeway, sheriff says

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX — A Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office deputy was struck and killed early Sunday while investigating a suspected drunken driving crash along Interstate 45, authorities said. Deputy Erika Serrato, 24, was assisting at the scene of a DWI-related crash on the northbound lanes of I-45 when she was hit by a commercial utility vehicle around 3:40 a.m., according to Montgomery County Sheriff Wesley Doolittle. Serrato was providing traffic cover for officers with the Oak Ridge Police Department about 30 minutes after the initial crash when the second collision occurred, investigators said. Serrato died at the scene. A second deputy, John Hernandez, was struck by debris and taken to a hospital with injuries that were not expected to be life-threatening.

Dollar General manager shot, killed by customer buying $1.58 hamburger buns, police say

COLUMBUS, GA — A Dollar General store manager was shot and killed in Georgia, and the suspect was later killed after police said he opened fire on officers and a K-9 at a separate scene. Investigators said 44-year-old Alexis Hill was shot and killed at the Dollar General just after 10 a.m. Tuesday. Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan pronounced Hill dead around 10:45 a.m. Bryan said a man came into the store to buy hamburger buns for $1.58 and handed Hill two crumpled $1 bills. As Hill straightened the cash, Bryan said the customer stepped to the side, pulled out a gun and shot her. Police said the gunman ran from the store. A short time later, officers tracked him to a second scene near Baker Plaza Drive. At that scene, Columbus police said the suspect shot an officer and a K-9. Officers returned fire, killing him. The coroner identified the suspect as 33-year-old Jerome Willis.

Grimmway Farms employee dies after tractor rolls off Highway 166 in Cuyama, catches fire

BAKERSFIELD, CA — A Grimmway Farms employee was killed in a work-related accident on June 17 shortly after noon. According to Cal Fire, the employee was driving a tractor when, for an unknown reason, it rolled off Highway 166 in Cuyama and caught fire. The San Luis Obispo County Coroner’s Office said the employee suffered severe burns and succumbed to his injuries. The employee worked for Grimmway Farms through a farm labor contractor. Police identify truck driver killed in crash, fire along I-64 in Kanawha County

KANAWHA COUNTY, WV — Police have identified a truck driver who died after a tractor trailer crashed and caught fire along Interstate 64 in Kanawha County. Jeffrey Carl Simons, 63, of Wellsburg, Iowa, was killed in a wreck that occurred Tuesday evening at the Dunbar-South Charleston Bridge, according to an update from South Charleston police. The crash closed westbound lanes of the interstate for several hours as crews worked to clear the wreck.

West Haven bar says the 2 men killed in shooting outside were employees

WEST HAVEN, CT — The two men who were killed outside Muzeum Sports Bar N Grille Saturday in West Haven were employees at the establishment, according to a Facebook post. Police officers say they arrived around the 600 block of Campbell Avenue around 1:30 a.m. Saturday for a reported shooting. Arriving on scene, officers found 31-year-old Miguel Daniel Blake of New Haven and 34-year-old Dravere Christopher Blake of Meriden with gunshot wounds. Both men, who were brothers, were taken to a nearby hospital and later died. Another person was also shot in the arm and leg, according to police. In a Facebook tribute to the two men, Muzeum Sports Bar N Grille said they were team members at the bar.

3 workers killed in shooting at Midland business, according to sheriff’s office

MIDLAND, TX — The Midland County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a possible shooting at a business near N County Road and Highway 80. The business is JAT Partner Logistics. According to Midland County Sheriff’s Office, three workers were shot and killed. Witnesses said the suspected shooter arrived at the business and intending to set the building on fire. One worker then confronted the suspect outside, and the worker was shot and killed. According to workers at the scene, a group of employees was in a meeting inside the building when the suspect entered and opened fire before turning the gun on himself.

Beloved ER nurse mowed down on SoCal highway after stopping to help DUI crash victim

SAN DIEGO, CA — A beloved Southern California ER nurse was killed after stopping to help at the scene of a DUI crash north of San Diego when another vehicle slammed into the wreckage and struck her. Nereida Benitez, known as “Nedi” to friends and coworkers, had just finished an overnight shift at San Diego’s Sharp Memorial Hospital and was driving home to Temecula when she pulled over to assist after a crash on Interstate 15 near State Route 76, ABC10 reported. According to the California Highway Patrol, a Toyota minivan had been rear-ended by a Honda CR-V driven by a 21-year-old man, sending the Honda into the median. Benitez, 40, stopped to help, as did another passerby, 54-year-old Marine veteran Chad Tillman. Authorities said Benitez and Tillman were standing on the driver’s side of the Honda when another vehicle collided with the CR-V. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

DPS investigating fatal Bell County crash that killed Temple truck driver

TEMPLE, TX — A Temple man was killed and a Killeen woman was seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash Thursday on State Highway 36 near the northwest Bell County line, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. DPS identified the man as 42-year-old Jonathan Aaron Thomas of Temple. Authorities said Thomas was driving a 2013 Mack truck southeast on SH 36 when he lost control of the vehicle. According to a preliminary investigation, a tire became detached from a trailer being towed by a third vehicle traveling toward Thomas’ truck. Investigators said Thomas took evasive action to avoid hitting the tire, causing the Mack truck to cross into the northbound lane and collide with an oncoming 2018 Freightliner delivery truck. The Freightliner was driven by a 25-year-old woman from Killeen, DPS said. Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene by Bell County Justice of the Peace Cliff Coleman.

Deputy killed when 18-wheeler slams road crew and catches fire, NC officials say

WHITEVILLE, NC — A deputy was killed when an 18-wheeler collided with a crew painting stripes on U.S. 74 in southeastern North Carolina, according to the N.C. State Highway Patrol. Deputy Damien Draper Bost, 30, was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital in Whiteville. Bost had been with the sheriff’s office eight years, and was a school resource officer at South Columbus High School, officials said. WOODLAND, CA — A crash on Interstate 5 claimed the life of a dump-truck driver early Thursday afternoon, authorities said. The California Highway Patrol reported a solo vehicle incident involving a Peterbilt dump truck occurred shortly after noon on southbound Interstate 5 in Woodland, south of Main Street. The driver was the sole occupant of the dump truck, according to a news release by the CHP’s Woodland office. A preliminary CHP investigation determined the dump truck went onto the right shoulder before it rolled over. When first responders arrived, according to CHP, the driver was still alive. They were taken to a nearby hospital, where they died of their injuries, the news release said.

Matteson police said at 10:54 p.m. Sunday, officers were called for shots fired at the fulfillment center at 7001 Vollmer Rd. Near the entrance to the facility, officers found an Amazon employee who had been shot multiple times in the torso. The victim was taken to Olympia Fields Hospital, where he died, police said. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office identified the victim as Dylan Perkins, 26, of Glenwood. Matteson police said Perkins and the suspected shooter, who was a food delivery driver, got into a quarrel that turned physical. During the fight, the shooter shot Perkins several times.

North Carolina Postal Worker shot dead, suspect in custody

Wilkes County, NC — A North Carolina man is under arrest after a U.S. Postal Service employee was shot and killed in Wilkes County…. The State Bureau of Investigation says Wilkes County deputies responded Friday to a call for assistance in the Hays Community. Upon arrival, they found postal worker Brandi Reynolds dead at the scene. Investigators later arrested William Craig Durham in connection with the shooting. The case remains under investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

Marked Tree officer killed in early morning crash while on duty

MARKED TREE, Ark. (WMC) – A Marked Tree Police officer was killed in a crash while on-duty. Officer Trevor Howard, 25, died Sunday and another officer was injured after an early-morning wreck. The crash occurred at the intersection of Broadway and Nathan streets just before 1 a.m. Officer Howard, who began working full-time for the Marked Tree Police Department in May of this year, died from the injuries he sustained in the wreck.
