Last Week workers were killed in explosions,  falls, shootings, tree cutting, vehicle incidents and trapped in a freezer. On average, over 100 workers are killed every week in the United States due to traumatic injuries suffered at work. More than 20 times as many die from occupational diseases, many due to exposure to hazardous substances many years before they died. The few narratives below (gathered from almost 100 Google News searches) do not come close to capturing the full toll that work takes on the working people of this country. Nevertheless the accounts below gave you a taste of the preventable carnage occurring in workplaces across the country every day.

Body of Arby’s manager found in restaurant’s freezer

New Iberia, LA — The dead body of an Arby’s manager was found in the restaurant’s freezer by workers, according to a report by KPLC reported. Police are treating the death as suspicious. The body was found on Thursday evening at the Arby’s in New Iberia, Louisiana. It’s unknown when the manager, a female, was last seen, according to reports. Police have identified the worker as 63-year old Nguyet Le.

One person killed at 3M plant after ‘industrial incident’

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wisconsin (KWWL) — One person was killed after an “industrial incident” at the 3M Plant in Prairie Du Chien on Tuesday. According to Prairie Du Chien Police, they were dispatched alongside Gundersen Ambulance Service around 6:43 a.m. to 801 North Marquette Road for a report of an injury. Officers and medics were brought to a victim who had suffered severe injuries from the incident. The victim died of their injuries at the scene. The victim has been identified as 57-year-old Trisha Jones from Harpers Ferry. 3M and employees cooperated with the initial investigation, and the incident will be investigated further by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Worker killed in Mass. pharmaceutical plant explosion

NEWBURYPORT, Mass. — A worker was killed Thursday after a powerful explosion tore through a pharmaceutical chemical plant in Massachusetts, ripping the roof off the building and prompting a U.S. senator to demand accountability from the plant’s owners. A vat that was once inside a Newburyport, Mass. pharmaceutical plant was hurled into the parking lot by an explosion. The Essex County District Attorney’s office has confirmed the worker who died in an explosion at a pharmaceutical chemical plant Thursday as Jack O’Keefe, 62, of Methuen. Initially, the search was hampered by concern about the plant’s structural integrity following the blast that sent flames leaping high above the building and scattering industrial debris nearby. Bradbury described the blast as a “seven-alarm hazardous materials” event. Four other workers were sent to the hospital as a precaution, but were uninjured and released. The explosion prompted U.S. Sen. Edward Markey to demand greater accountability from the troubled facility.

19-year-old killed working at a gravel pit

BROOKINGS, S.D. (KSFY) – A 19-year-old man was killed in a workplace accident in South Dakota Tuesday, according to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said employees found Izak Wixon dead at a gravel pit around 12:45 p.m. They believe the accident happened shortly before he was found. Though other workers were at the site, Wixon was alone at the time of the accident. According to officials, he was working near a large piece of machinery at the time. Wixon’s death remains under investigation by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and the Mine Safety and Health Administration.

ARDOT worker dies after being hit by vehicle on I-430

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — A Little Rock man has died after he was hit by a vehicle driving in the northbound lane of I-430 on Monday afternoon. According to reports, 25-year-old Timothy Harris was a maintenance worker for ARDOT who had been on the job for about two months. He was called to clear debris in the roadway near exit 9 Cantrell after the Rodney Parham interchange. A spokesperson for ARDOT explained that Harris went out to clear the debris around 1:00 p.m. in a marked truck while wearing a safety vest. There was apparently a shovel in the roadway, and he went to move it out of the way. Witnesses said it looked like he misjudged his chances of getting back to the side of the road. He quickly threw the shovel out of the way, when one vehicle avoided hitting Harris and then turned in the opposite direction of the shovel. This is when a second driver hit Harris. He was then taken to the hospital where he died shortly before 10:00 p.m.

One Person Killed in Industrial Accident

West Babylon, NY — Suffolk County Police Homicide detectives are investigating an industrial accident that killed a man in West Babylon today. Marcos Bonilla was killed in an accident on May 8 at Omni Recycling in West Babylon when he was struck by a payloader at approximately 1 p.m. The adult male, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has been notified.

23-year-old security guard killed in downtown shooting

OMAHA, Neb. — 23-year-old Gom Gout died after a shooting in Downtown Omaha near 10th and Capitol early Sunday morning, while he was working as a security guard. Keloni Jones, 24, was arrested and is facing charges of second-degree murder and use of a weapon to commit a felony. The family says he was a hard worker and was passionate about video games and basketball

Logger killed by falling tree in Trempealeau County

Blair, WI –A logger was found deceased Tuesday late morning after being struck by a falling tree. According to the Trempealeau County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at 11:51 a.m. May 9 to a logging accident at N30588 Quarne Road in Blair. It was determined the victim, whose name, age, and place of residence have not yet been released, died from injuries sustained when a tree fell on them.

Construction worker dies after falling several floors in Bal Harbour

BAL HARBOUR, FLA. (WSVN) – A construction worker has died after, officials said, he fell several floors from a parking garage. It happened at the Bal Harbour Shops near Collins Avenue and 96th Street, Tuesday. A witness said the worker fell several floors from a parking garage and did not survive.

Employee killed at Tellico Plains sawmill identified

TELLICO PLAINS, Tenn. (WATE) – The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man who died at a Tellico Plains business on Monday, May 8. According to a Monroe County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, an employee of Frerichs Saw Mill on New Highway 68 died after becoming trapped under a concrete barrier. The incident occurred around 3 p.m. The victim has been identified as Adam Taylor, 44. It’s not yet clear how he came to be trapped under the concrete barrier.

Adan Ernesto Mata-Portillo Killed in Train Accident on Business 20 in Barstow, TX

Barstow, TX — May 5, 2023, one person sustained fatal injuries following an 18-wheeler versus train accident at around 7:00 p.m. on Business 20. Initial details about the deadly collision say that it took place off the corner of Business 20 and County Road 135. Authorities with the Texas Department of Public Safety reported that 33-year-old Adan Ernesto Mata-Portillo, sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. It’s unclear at this time if anyone on the train was hurt. Right now, factors leading up to the crash are still under investigation. Authorities have yet to provide additional details about what they’re looking into currently.

Amazon employee dies after injury at Fort Wayne facility: police

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – An Amazon employee died Monday after an injury at a fulfillment center in Fort Wayne. Officers with the Allen County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched on reports of an injured employee at the facility off Smith Road near Fort Wayne International Airport. Police said the employee,  Caes David Gruesbeck, 20, was taken to the hospital in critical condition. They were pronounced dead at the hospital, according to police. WANE 15 reached out to a representative of Amazon, and a statement was emailed to us saying the facility is temporarily closed and employees were sent home with pay. Amazon employees in fulfillment centers pack customer orders, operate equipment, and may work at heights up to 40 feet, according to the job description online.

Construction worker dies after falling at Bryan Co. megasite

BRYAN COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) – A construction worker has died after falling at the Bryan County megasite over the weekend. Hyundai is describing this as a workplace accident that happened on Saturday morning. Bryan County’s deputy coroner says a 35-year-old man died after falling from a structure of what will be the paint shop at the electric vehicle plant. The paint shop was one of the first buildings to go vertical at the site following the plant’s groundbreaking back in October. Hyundai says the man fell from a three-story structure. The coroner’s office says the worker fell from 60 feet. The company says the worker’s safety harness lanyard failed resulting in the fall.

OSHA to launch investigation into worker’s death following trailer collapse

LAREDO, TX. (KGNS) – The investigation continues into the death of a 36-year-old man at a private business that was reported over the weekend. Laredo Police say OSHA, a federal agency that investigates labor related incidents, will be looking into the case. The victim was identified as Juan Jose Uvaldo Salazar. It’s believed that a trailer box collapsed and left him caught in between two trailers. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident has been preliminary ruled as an accident.

Man killed in logging accident in Santa Rosa County

SANTA ROSA COUNTY, Fla. — A man was killed in a logging accident in Santa Rosa County Monday morning. Santa Rosa County Fire dispatch received a call around 8:25 a.m. to the 2800 block of Sugarberry Circle in Milton. A county spokesperson tells WEAR News the man was crushed by logs that came off a truck. The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accident.

1 dead after struck by private bus in Raleigh, officials confirm

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — One person has died in an industrial accident after being struck by a bus Tuesday afternoon in Raleigh, the city’s police and fire departments confirmed to CBS 17. The Raleigh Police Department said it responded around 4:50 p.m. to the 1300 block of Kirkland Road after a person was struck by a bus. A preliminary investigation reveals it was a private bus that hit the person and not a school or city bus, police said. Raleigh Fire Department Division Chief Jake Corker confirmed the incident was deadly.

Mail carrier dies in crash hours before retirement

YPSILANTI, N.D. (WDAY) – A North Dakota mail carrier for nearly three decades was looking forward to spending his first summer in retirement, but just hours before that retirement was set to begin, he died in a car crash. Judy Anderson and her husband, Ken Anderson, had been discussing their travel plans as he prepared for retirement after 28 years of delivering mail. The post office congratulated him with a cake on April 21, his last day of work. “He enjoyed his job, that’s for sure,” Judy Anderson said. Ken Anderson was retiring after 28 years of delivering mail, so the post office congratulated him with a cake on his last day of work. But just hours before his retirement was set to begin, he died in a car crash. But while Ken Anderson was out delivering his last bit of mail before retiring, he hit slush on the road, rolled his jeep into the ditch and was ejected. He was alive long enough to call 911, but all dispatch heard was him saying, “Help me.” His wife says if not for the crash, he would have been home as an official retiree just hours later.

Cameron Police Officer shot and killed while responding to domestic dispute

Cameron, TX — A Cameron Police Officer was killed while responding to a domestic dispute late Wednesday night, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Sgt. Bryan Washko said Cameron and Rockdale police were called to the 700 block of N. Travis around 11 p.m. Wednesday. Washko said a woman called to report a shooting. By the time police arrived, the woman had managed to run to a nearby store, Washko said. She said she was grazed by a bullet was not seriously injured. Police later served a warrant at a residence in the 500 block of East 7th St, where a suspect reportedly opened fire on police. Police got into a shootout with the suspect, in which a long gun was used. One of the Cameron police officers was shot. He was taken to Baylor Scott and White Hospital, where he died, according to Washko.

Hospital employee pulls out gun, kills coworker at VCU Medical Center

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Police are investigating after an argument between two men resulted in a deadly shooting at VCU Medical Center. Around midnight on Wednesday, May 10, officers with VCU Police and the Richmond Police Department were called to the VCU Medical Center North Hospital for a report that shots had been fired inside. According to 8News sources, a fight between two hospital employees resulted in one pulling out a gun and shooting the other. Police confirmed one gun was located and seized. Police said that one man was shot and pronounced dead while the other man was taken into custody.

McDonald’s worker lures manager to door, then shoots and kills her

Moultrie, GA — A Georgia man is accused of shooting and killing three people, including his manager, state investigators say. Surveillance video shows Kentavious White, 26, called his manager to the door of a McDonald’s in Moultrie before shooting and killing her, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. White then turned the gun on himself, agents said. Authorities responded to the restaurant May 4 and found their bodies inside, investigators said. The woman who died was identified as Amia Smith.

Suspect accused of killing a Van Buren County road worker arrested

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. — The suspect accused of killing Van Buren County road worker Rene Rangel was arrested Monday, according to the Van Buren County Prosecutor’s Office. The suspect, who was not named by county officials, was charged with the following: Operating while intoxicated causing death, a 15-year felony. Moving violation causing death in a work or school bus zone, a 15-year felony..Motor vehicle operation without security, a 1-year misdemeanor. Rangel, 58, was killed March 3 at County Road 681 and 48th Avenue near Lawrence Township when the driver of a 1997 Dodge pickup truck rear ended a 2012 Chevrolet pickup truck while trying to pass, and hit Rangel while he was working, according to Michigan State Police.

Truck driver killed on Mississippi interstate when two 18-wheelers collide

Lauderdale County, MS — A truck driver was killed in an accident involving two 18-wheelers Monday morning on a stretch of Mississippi interstate. Officials with the Mississippi Highway Patrol report that the wreck occurred shortly after midnight Monday. The victim was identified as David Loper, 59, of Moselle. Loper died when he crashed into another 18-wheeler that had overturned on Interstate 20 in Lauderdale County.

LAWRENCE, IN — An adult woman died Monday afternoon after being shot inside a Dollar Tree store in Lawrence. According to police, the 25-year-old victim is an employee at the store. The incident is believed to be isolated at this time. The Marion County Coroner has identified the victim as Jasmine Bennett. Lawrence Police Department Chief Gary Woodruff says a 21-year-old male suspect in in custody. The suspect is a former employee of the store.

1 dead, 1 injured in fiery Florida crash after gasoline tanker truck explodes

Hillsborough County, FL — An Alabama man was killed Saturday morning in an explosive crash on U.S. Route 41 in Florida when a vehicle rear-ended the gasoline tanker truck he was driving, according to authorities and local reports. The crash happened around 2:43 a.m. on the southbound lanes of Route 41 near Bloomingdale Avenue in Hillsborough County, the Florida Highway Patrol said. The 2020 Kia Stinger, driven by a 23-year-old man, struck the back of the tanker, which immediately exploded before striking a utility pole, FOX13 Tampa reported, citing an FHP report.

Deptford Township police officer dies from injuries sustained when he was shot in the line of duty

Deptford Township, PA — A Deptford Township police officer died Sunday from a gunshot wound sustained in the line of duty two months ago, authorities said. Officer Robert Shisler, 27, had been hospitalized at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania after he was shot in the leg on March 10 by an armed suspect during a foot chase through a residential neighborhood in the Gloucester County community. Shisler returned fire, hitting the man — Mitchell Negron Jr., 24 — who was declared dead at the scene.

Allen, TX — A 20-year-old security guard and an engineer who moved to the US from India were identified as two of the eight people fatally shot at a Texas mall Saturday. Christian LaCour, of Farmersville, was on the job and Aishwarya Thatikonda, of McKinney, was shopping with a friend when they were both killed at the Allen Premium Outlets after gunman Mauricio Garcia began shooting, according to local reports. Sandra Montgomery, LaCour’s grandmother, mourned the loss of her “beautiful grandson” while confirming he was among the fatalities.

Employee found dead inside Tulare spa

TULARE, Calif. – Tulare police have arrested a suspect accused of a homicide at a spa. Back on April 9, Tulare Fire crews were called to a fire at 7 Day Spa on K Street off of Tulare -Avenue. During their search of the building, they found an employee in one of the rooms who was unresponsive. She was identified as Xiuqun Yuan of Los Angeles.Police say she was taken to the hospital, where she died. Detectives and arson investigators found evidence of foul play in the building. After an extensive investigation, they were able to identify 32-year-old Jacoby Jackson of Tulare as a suspect in this case.

Denali National Park staffer killed in avalanche he triggered, officials say

Denali, Alaska — A Denali National Park and Preserve employee was killed in an avalanche he triggered while skiing in Alaska’s wilderness areas, which are home to the country’s highest peak, officials said Friday. According to the National Park Service, Eric Walter was found dead Thursday after emergency responders rushed to the general area of his last location. The valet said he was skiing alone on the unnamed north slope south of Jenny Creek when he triggered an avalanche. Part of Walter’s job was guiding others in the 6.1 million-acre federal park, helping keep communications flowing, and helping visitors and workers protect the National Park Service park.

McKees Rocks, PA — A McKees Rocks man died in an industrial accident at his workplace, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office said Friday. The medical examiner identified the victim as Jonathan Smith, 42. He was working in the 100 block of River Road in McKees Rocks when the accident occurred about 1:35 p.m. He was pronounced dead a few minutes later, a news release from the medical examiner said.

REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio (WCMH) — An employee at a Reynoldsburg manufacturing plant died Tuesday in an industrial accident, the company confirmed Wednesday. Employee Mitsavanh “Mits” Boualyvongsane died at the TS Tech plant in the 8400 block of East Broad Street, according to a spokesperson. TS Tech, which manufactures car seats and other interior auto parts, is working with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to investigate the cause of the accident — but the spokesperson did not detail Wednesday how the accident occurred.

‘Google employee jumps to death from office’

NEW YORK, NY – A Google employee fell to their death from the company’s Manhattan offices. A software engineer at Google fell to his death at the tech company’s Manhattan offices, according to a report. A 31-year-old man plunged to his death on Thursday evening around 11.30pm, according to the New York Post, citing police sources. The man reportedly worked at the search engine’s office located at 111 8th Avenue in Chelsea. He was found on the street unconscious and taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Handprints and footprints were reportedly found at an open-air terrace on the Google building’s 14th floor. The man left no note before the fatal fall. Thursday’s incident is the second reported death of a New York City Google employee in just over two months. On February 16, Jacob Pratt, a 33-year-old partnership leader at the company, was found dead in his apartment. His death was ruled a suicide.

Man killed in industrial accident at Chatsworth business

Chatsworth, TN — A man was killed Thursday at a Chatsworth business. Police say the man was removed from a machine at Sprinturf by fellow employees Thursday afternoon. It’s not clear what type of machine was involved. Sprinturf makes artificial turf products, such as those used on football, soccer and baseball fields. First responders were dispatched about 3:03pm to the Industrial Boulevard business. The man, identified as Jerry Lamar Norris, 34, of Chatsworth was airlifted to a Chattanooga hospital for emergency treatment. Norris later succumbed to his injuries while at the hospital, police said.

2 people sought in connection to deadly shooting of Toledo store employee

TOLEDO, Wash. — The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in finding two gunmen who are believed to be involved in the killing of a Toledo store employee. Someone called the sheriff’s office just before 9 p.m. Wednesday to report that they saw two masked people run out of a store in the 100 block of Mulford Road in Toledo and get into a white extended cab Dodge pick-up truck. The person told law enforcement that the individual’s actions “appeared suspicious.” When deputies arrived, they found the worker dead inside the business.

North Carolina construction worker, a father of 4, killed in crash on I-40

RALEIGH, N.C. — A construction worker was killed Wednesday when an SUV plowed into an active work zone on Interstate 40, crashing into equipment. Around 3 a.m., the SUV hit and killed a worker before crashing into construction equipment, the State Highway Patrol said. The driver, Jeyson Alexander Murcia-Guillen, 20, of Smithfield, faces multiple charges, including felony death by vehicle. Claude Tyler Bryant, or C.J., 33, of Rocky Mount, was killed. Bryant worked for S.T. Wooten, a private construction company.

Dump Truck Driver, 56, Killed In Route 287 Crash

Oakland, NJ — The southbound highway was closed in Mahwah after the Mack truck driven by Ron Appel of Riverdale struck a guardrail and landed on its side in Oakland shortly before 8 a.m. Thursday, May 4, New Jersey State Trooper. II Charles Marchan said. Franklin Lakes police and firefighters and New Jersey State Police were among the responders. They believe that Appel — who was widely respected and admired by his peers as an expert driver — suffered a heart attack.

Truck driver killed after crashing into semi hauling Corvettes

Harrison County, In — A Truck driver killed after crashing into semi hauling Corvettes. The crash occurred around 4 p.m. on May 4 in Harrison County, Indiana. Indiana State Police describe the events leading to the crash: “After the preliminary investigation, Troopers believe a White 2013 Volvo semi-truck pulling a car-hauling trailer was merging into the eastbound lane of I-64 from the Corydon exit. At the same time, a Red 2014 Volvo semi-truck, pulling an empty box trailer, was eastbound on I-64 approaching the same exit. As the white semi merged into the slow lane of the interstate, the red semi collided with the rear of the car hauler trailer. The impact of the crash then pushed both vehicles off into the emergency lane on the south side of I-64, where both vehicles came to rest.” The driver hauling the cars wasn’t seriously hurt. The red Volvo driver, later identified as Clarence E. Mitchell, 64, required “extensive” extrication by the Harrison Township Fire Department. He was airlifted to a hospital and later passed away.”

20-year-old 7-Eleven store clerk shot and killed

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Suffolk police are investigating after a 7-Eleven clerk was shot and killed on the job Friday morning. According to police, the shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. Friday at the 7-Eleven located in the 800 block of Carolina Road, near Tyson Court and Horton Drive. The business is in a relatively isolated area just north of Suffolk Executive Airport. Two unknown subjects entered the 7-Eleven with handguns and started shooting at Ketron Exavier Smith, the store clerk. Smith, 20-year-old man, sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced deceased on the scene.

Officials identify driver killed in crash, chemical spill on I-10 in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz.  — Officials have identified the driver who died in a crash that resulted in a nitric acid spill on Interstate 10 earlier this week in Tucson. Rick Immel, 54, of Nevada may have experienced a medical issue before the crash on Tuesday, DPS officials said during a news conference Thursday afternoon, adding that intoxication was not a factor. The rollover caused the trailer shell to crack open, sending plumes of the volatile chemical into the air. Following the accident, I-10 was closed in both directions and area residents were told to shelter in place. After more than a day, I-10 reopened and the shelter in place order was lifted Wednesday evening. Immel was hauling liquid nitric acid for Landstar System, Inc. and was headed to Theodore, Ala.

T-Mobile employee killed in armed robbery, shooting at Baltimore store identified

BALTIMORE, MD — A man died after being shot Sunday in an armed robbery at his workplace, a T-Mobile store in Canton, Baltimore Police said. Officers responded Sunday afternoon to the T-Mobile Store in the 2500 block of Boston Street, where they found the 23-year-old employee inside with a gunshot wound. Fabian Alberto Sanchez Gonzalez was taken to a hospital for treatment and died Monday, according to police. Police said two unidentified males entered the store, announced a robbery, and one of the suspects shot the employee. The suspects then demanded the belonging of several customers before leaving the store on foot.

Local man dies after industrial accident in Blackfoot

BLACKFOOT, ID— A 59-year-old man passed away due to injuries from an industrial accident on Friday. Cpt. Wes Wheatley with the Blackfoot Police Department told EastIdahoNews.com officers responded to S & G Electric Motor Repair in Blackfoot at 8:35 a.m. for a man injured on some machinery. “He was still alert and talking when officers were there,” Wheatley said. Bonneville County Coroner Rick Taylor said the man was taken to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls and died later in the evening due to his injuries. Taylor identified him as Robert Davis of Pocatello. Next of kin has been notified. Taylor explained Davis was caught in some type of industrial lathe, and that was the cause of his death. The death was deemed to be accidental.

Section of I-10 could take 2 days to reopen after deadly, fiery semi crash near Willcox

WILLCOX, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) — ADOT says it could take 48 hours to reopen westbound lanes of Interstate 10 after a fiery crash killed a truck driver and caused a significant closure from Willcox to the New Mexico state line. The crash happened just after midnight Wednesday on I-10 at milepost 331 near Willcox. According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, a semi ran off the right side of the roadway, struck a guardrail, and then collided with a pillar at the State Route 191 overpass. One pillar buckled and the truck caught fire. The driver was killed. Their name has not yet been released. DPS officials later confirmed that no hazardous materials were being transported.

Truck Driver Killed In Rollover Recently Married, Moved To Northern Minn.

New Independence, MN — The wife of a man who died over the weekend in a rollover tanker accident in New Independence, Minnesota told FOX 21 they moved to the area two months ago for a fresh start and change of scenery. Wisconsin sheriff’s deputy fatally shot in St. Croix County during DWI stop

GLENWWOD CITY, Wis. (FOX 90 – A St. Croix County deputy was fatally shot while responding to a call about a possible drunk driver near Glenwood City, Wisconsin Saturday night. The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) says the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office received a call around 6:15 p.m. about a drunk driver in a ditch near Glenwood City, according to a DOJ press release. Deputy Kaitie Leising was shot and killed as she responded to a drunk driving call after a vehicle went into the ditch. The Wisconsin Department of Justice says the officer conducted field sobriety tests on the shooter, identified as 34-year-old Jeremiah Johnson, before returning to his vehicle. Authorities say Johnson was “evasive” during the interaction. After speaking for about eight minutes, Johnson “turned toward Deputy Leising, drew a handgun, and shot her.” The DOJ says Deputy Leising was able to return fire but did not strike Johnson.
